Chop the fender on my '04 RS?

So the only "kit" I found here after using the search was the SkyKing kit
http://skykingproducts.com/Merchant2...de=TR_ST_98_02

I notice the same one is used for the TT600, and remembered seeing this Competition Werkes kit
http://secure.compwerkes.com/Detail.bok?no=271

Anyone tried that or heard of spectacular failures in the attempt?

Oh, and pictures are coming, got her home last night and she's gorgeous- it's just raining cats and dogs right now so the brain turns to "How to enjoy a motorcycle indoors"

I trimmed the stocker. The plate and sigs still attach to it but it's alot cleaner. It's easy to do with a razor knife or dremel w/ diamond cutting disc. Now that I've removed the stock sigs and gone with good LED's I'll probably trim it some more once I get a chance.

If you're gonna hack it off to install an aftermarket kit, you might as well see if you can mod the stock one first IMO. Probably this winter I'll cut the whole thing off and make an aluminum bracket but chopping it works until then.

why not take a hacksaw blade to the existing fender and use the existing license plate mount?

pelon, looks nice. What part of PA do you call home?

pelon/triplewithcheese, it's worth a shot for sure. I had two reasons for wanting a kit though, one is that our plates need to be drilled to match the mounting holes in the stock fender and second I wanted to tuck it and the signals up nice and tight. Plus, it's be good to know there was a replacement available should the razor knife "slip" a bit...

I did my cutting with a hack saw blade that way you can go nice and slow and make corrections along the course. I marked it up to make sure it blended in to the rear fairing then slowly started cutting. It took less than 20 minutes start to finish including drilling new holes for the signals and plate bracket. Looking at your model year I would probably cut just along the ridge where the turn signal stalks are mounted and cut the rear just below where the reflector is mounted.

Oh dear - you're starting down the slippery slope.
Only had it a few days and ready to start the mods.
I warn you - once you start, you can't stop!

Be sure to post pics of your mods - before & after shots
Good luck!

Bobbing the rear fender was quite the thing and I'm surprised it hasn't come up before lately.

Triumphnet.com has a nice write up on how to chop the fender. Mine was chopped when I bought it, looks like they did it following that write up. It didn't have turn signals so I went to local bike shop and bought $20 set and drilled a hole in the remaining part of fender and attached them that way. looks really good actually.
