DIY paint questions!

so I have bad paint.
its an 01 rs with 12k miles. the previous owner put decals on the tank and I tried to remove them today. I ended up ripping some paint. Has anyone done a DIY strip, primer and paint job? any favorite products colors, or tips?
how much paint did you use? etc
how did you protect the tank while sanding?
does the tank material change primer/paint selection?

thanks in advance
cheers

I am a big Dupont fan. You can get Chromapremier in single stage and you dont have to clear it. Chromapremier is their top line paint which is a Urethane base. Super durable.

The only thing the tank changes is how you wash down the tank before you paint. Make sure you use a wash that is safe for plastics.

You will need about a quart of paint for the Sprint with all the fairings.

I would use a high end Dupont Primer as well..

Rule of thumbs, dust sucks and shows up
Your paint job is only as good as your prep work
If you have strips of paint missing you need to go down to base
A good primer will only fill the scratch that 280 grit paper leaves
A good paint only fills the scratch that 400 grit paper leaves

awesome,

I may be an ignoramus, but is there a suitable rattle can paint, as I have no paint booth. the air compressor I have access to will be used for dust cleaning only.

I've shot PPG 2-stage paint for many jobs. You can have the local automotive paint shop put the color you select in rattle cans. They aren't too bad but a great quality spray gun does a much better job. Preparation is the key. Lots and lots of sanding to get the surface perfect then use a good degreaser and tack rag before you lay down the color. I'm sure there are Internet sites with step-by-step procedures. Good luck!

you wont be happy with rattle can paint. I know from experience, while it looks good from 10 feet you dont ride 10 feet off your bike. You dont need a spray booth either, my dad restores old cars that win shows in his 2 car garage (in my crash forum, the background of some of the pics there is an old packard he's currently doing) just set a fan in the window to blow out, and keep the doors shut. The compressor may be to small if its only good for blowing dust though.

I'd recommend calling a smaller auto body repair shop, perhaps even a local high school, and asking them how much it cost to repaint the tank. Something that small shouldn't be to expensive. Heck if you find a high school to do it it'd be free, cant beat that. I know my school would do it, it would just take a while.

Redmossy that is a great suggestion.

An autobody shop will shoot your tins for a couple hours shop labour if you do all the prepping and bring them to the shop off the bike.

Personally that is what I would do.

has anyone done this on their (nylon?) sprint tank? what considerations are there for prep and paint selection?
I'd hate to melt this thing or have paint fall off again

You dont have to do anything extra. Professional paint has flex agents in it but even that isn't necessary on the Sprint tank. The plastic is as rigid as metal and does not flex.

just sand down your tank starting at 120-180-240-320 and take it to a body shop. easiest way
