How is the riding in Nth Queensland?

G'day all,

The wife and I are looking at moving to Cairns. I have a chance at a job there that would be a great career move and we are ready to get out of Sydney, we have had enough of this rat race and this state government (notwithstanding that Morris Iemma was blessed by the Pope yesterday).

Now, the burning questions from a motorcyclist's stand point when contemplating such a move, is where to ride, what are the roads like, weather conditions, etc, etc.

So, we know the dry season is glorious weather wise and wet season is well, wet.
Could it be that this is a place where the best riding is to be had in the winter months?

While we are on the subject, what is the riding like in Nth Queensland? Will I miss the fabulous roads north, south and west of Sydney?

I would appreciate the heads up...

Cheers,

Roden

Cairns itself is a great place to live but the summers can get pretty humid.

The Gillies Ranges and the Atherton Tablelands are great biking areas with good wide roads and excellent twisties and a mixture of features.

OldScratcher is mainly on the NewBonnevilleRiders nowadays.

Ok, thanks for that, I'll see if I can contact oldscratcher!

I have seen some of his videos riding the back roads on his Scrambler, it looked like fun, maybe theres a Tiger in my future...

Cheers,

Roden

The areas around Milanda and Kuranda are great. Winding and well posted, fast and relatively smooth surfaces that are generally well maintained.

Excellent roads but the cops used to be a bit full on.

The dry season is great. 25C and fine ALL the time.

The wet is around 35C but HUMID and STICKY all the time. You do get use to it after a while but the torrential downpours and the lightning shows are awesome to say the least.
