I have a 2000 sprint rs with about 20,000 miles on it. last night when I got home I tunred the bike off and took the key out. the spedo and tach lights did not go off...and the parking light was not on. if I undid the battery and then hooked it back up, the lights would stay off.

I am pretty sure it's a bad relay somewhere.....any other suggestions

try this..

with the ignition off, swing the bars from lock to lock. Do the lights come on, or go off?

A fairly common short life (4 years) part is the ignition barrel. When the bits inside die, you can get power to various bits without having the ignition on.

I recently helped BonnevilleT140v to replace his, and we could turn the bike on and off (not start it!) simply by swinging the bars.

I tried the swinging the the bar thing and it didn't do anything.

now here is the latest. the headlights don't go on when the bike is started....but if I disconect the battery for a second with the bike running....the bike shuts off and the lights go on. and you can hear one of the relays click.

I am stumped...I may have to bring it somewhere, which I hate doing.

does anyone know if this bike can use just regular automotive relays?
