This is why people hate motorcyclists....

All kidding aside, this is the impression given off by our riding to non-riders. Look, if you are dumb enough to get on a bike with a revoked license, get drunk and night ride recklessly then you get what you get. Unfortunately this is too often the case.

Injured motorcyclist gets DUI citation
THE BLOTTER
3:55 AM CDT, June 26, 2008
A motorcyclist hospitalized after being thrown from his bike in a crash on Chicago's Northwest Side Wednesday was ticketed overnight with drunken driving and other traffic citations, police said.

Dariusz Szyrszen, 32, remained at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge after the 4:30 p.m. Wednesday crash in the 7000 West Addison Street, Officer Amina Greer said.

Szyrszen was westbound on Addison when he slammed into a Buick waiting to make a left turn onto Nora Avenue in the Dunning neighborhood, she said. He was ejected from the bike and was taken to Lutheran General in critical condition but he had stable vital signs Thursday morning, according to police.

Szyrszen, of the 3700 block of North Paris Avenue, was cited for driving under the influence, having no insurance, speeding and driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to Greer.

That just means that everytime a motorcyclist is a bonehead the rider dies and everytime a cager is a bonehead they kill someone else.

Two points here:
  1. When a motorcyclist does something boneheaded, the whole motorcycle community suffers the ire and judgment of the mostly non-riding public. When a cager does something boneheaded, s/he is individually chastised. Note that they distinguish that he was a biker (first) and drunk (second) and not just that he was driving drunk as a cage would be reported.
  2. With gas and insurance prices going through the roof, you can bet there will be more and more bikes on the road as time goes by. Many of them will transfer their poor cage driving skills over to poor piloting skills thus resulting in more boneheaded incidents consequently see #1. We should brace ourselves for more bike-specific legislation, with most of which I will disagree. I would however, support mandatory BRC classes and training before getting a bike endorsement.

Well then you'd like one thing about California. As of July 1st 2008, it will be illegal to drive while talking on your cell phone unless you have a hands-free device. It's a start anyway. Fines start at $100.

Yes finally!!!! BTW I like a lot of things about CA. Here in Texas they have crap that makes no sense at all when it come to driving laws. First they repeal the Helmet Law for Motorcycles, Then allow phones and so far have not even seriously thought about outlawing them, and they spend millions of dollars annually on this click it or ticket campaign. I would rather have a cage driver wear no seat belt than to be talking on a phone and worse yet text messaging. If they have a wreck with no seat belt it's on them if they run into me while talking on their cell it's on me, thanks to them. All in the name of protecting us

The texting thing is driving me crazy. I see more teenagers driving and texting all the time. I hate it. Why wait until people start dying before they make it illegal.

Denman you are spot on with your comments above.
