46mm Socket

After forking out $50.00 bucks to my dealer last year to mount a rear tire because I didn't have the tools to get the wheel off I decided it was time to get my own 46mm socket. I looked at several ranging in price from $15.00 to $50.00+. I decided on this one. http://www.sjdiscounttools.com/sk34096.html
It arrived today and looks like it will do the job nicely. Key features for me...6 point and 1/2 inch drive. Most 46mm sockets I looked at were 12 point (not my 1st choice) and 3/4 inch drive. Since I don't have anything in 3/4 inch drive I would have to buy an adapter as well so even the cheaper sockets would have cost me about the same as this one did.
Just thought I'd pass this along.

Speed Safe,
Don

I did a similar thing when I bought my 99ST in 2000.

Shortly after I bought it, I got a puncture and visited my local bike shop for a repair, only to find they didnt have a 46mm socket! Fortunately one of the mechanics convinced the workshop manager that was as good a time as any to get one.

No, I couldnt believe it either...

I had to hunt around but eventually found a good tool supplier.

I ended up with a 36mm & 46mm socket.
3/4" to 1/2" adapter.
Extension bar
Torx set with 1/2" drive.

All up this cost me about $400 at the time, but its all paid for itself many times over.
The proper tools are worth their weight in gold.

A few years ago I picked one up at Northern Tool for about $10.00. It has done the job, but the SK six point one you have is definitely a quality tool.

Since the axle nut is relatively low profile, and I like to carry the socket with me on long trips, I cut it down to save space and make it more convenient to stow.

There is lots I haven't figured out yet, but I'm still learning.

There are some very knowledgeable members of this forum that have been around for a while who rarely post now. But when they do, I pay close attention and learn from them.

Sometimes we don't even think of the obvious. Got mine off the tool wall at Sears Hardware last year. If memory serves me right it was $12 for the 3/4 inch drive socket and a 1/2 to 3/4 adapter...just in case. It is a 12 pointer though...but it's worked fine every time. I like the "cut down" idea...looks like I'll be firing up the grinder tonight. I love it when sparks fly off the grinder!
