Xmission Shift Problem Poll, 2nd Try

I have been reading posts describing shifting problems and am curious about it because my bike does not have that problem. I thought I would compose a poll question that could bring some focus to the problem, but have came to the conclusion that it will take more than one poll to get any meaningful information. So, depending on the results of this poll, more may follow to further define the issue.

Question: Have you taken you +05 Sprint to your dealer service department with the specific complaint of poor, or difficult, or clunky shifting, or any other transmission complaint?

I don't have a Sprint but I do have an '04 Speed Triple and it has the most unpredictable tranny I have ever seen. Mainly 1st and 2nd gear is the worst, clunks bad sometimes. Then sometimes smooth as silk who knows? I just figured it was one of their traits. I have never had a bike that made as many funny noises as this one. But I still love riding it. I am off on a 200 mile trip tommorrow.

All have to remember, Sprints all have straight cut gears, not taper like slushbox grocery getters. If the gears to be engaged are nose to nose there might probably be a little clunk as they won't just slide by one another. Racing boxes in other words.

I find that my 08 can be a bit stiff and can be hard to find neutral when cold but after its warmed up it is aggressively satisfying.

???

Not much point for me here - mines a 2002 - but hey, it's fun to open posts that have nothing to do with your ride. xxx just joking guys xxx - as far as I'm concerned the 02 was a bit notchy when new but is now smooth as butter, specially with the S3 gear change lever..

As mentioned before, my 06 exhibits the occasional double click going into 5th and 6th but not as much now as it did when it was new. I did take it to the dealer when it was still new and asked him about it and he suggested I get some miles on it because the transmissions on these bikes are pretty tight when new. 'Give it a chance to break in' was his comment. Truthfully, I did not think too much about it because my VFR did the same thing the whole time I owned it and it had 70k on it when I sold it so I was used to dealing with it.

Speed Safe,
Don

Clunky xmission

I have taken mine to the dealer and complained of 'clunky' (a very technical term) gears
I believe that it relates to the 10K service interval, this is too long for this bike and should be 7.5K

I was interested to read Dolson's reply - 'slushbox grocery getter' - obviously someone who is happy with all aspects of his Sprint

.. same as you OnD - no problems.
Except - once it was getting difficult to find neutral when coming to a stop - it was due to the clutch cable needing adjusting.
It had stretched a bit and wasnt properly disengaging

As far as the 10k service interval, one is free to have it serviced as often as they like.

As far as being happy with every aspect of my bike, I don't think I ever said that.

As far as the OP most people don't understand or know about race style gear boxes with straight cut gears and that most shifting issues can be traced to improper oil or the shifter not being properly adjusted.
The amount of threads on this over the years has been many. "Hey my bike is hard and "clunky" (gotta love that term) going into 1st. gear." When just a slight roll or double clutch will get the gear cogs out of toe to toe alignment and it will "snick" (love that one too) into gear. It is in most cases the nature of the beast. Nothing is wrong with it it's just the way it's designed and most don't understand it. And no, I wouldn't have them change it. It's stronger the way it is.

My 2004 g'box much the same as Harry's although I have all my standard shifting gear and Motul oil which provides slick shifts.

+1 to what Dolson said I agree 100%.
