Power commander or Tune boy?

So like the rest of you I have an amazing sprint ST, bought it last year blue 4000 miles and with an after-market two brothers pipe. Took it in for a 6000 mile service, got it back would not hold the idle, back fired on deceleration (like bank robbers were chasing me) and stalled when I pulled the clutch in. Back it went to the triumph dealer 10 days later back it came, still backfiring although not as bad but still stalling, and running very poor. I did some research found out it is probably the mapping and a power commander looked like a good solution but they only seem to make them for the 2005 and 2006 models. Called another dealer the said to get a tune boy and download the maps.

I wanted to ask what the best option is here, has anyone used a power commander (Dynojet) or the tuneboy?

I know I could take it back again to the dealer but hey they have had it twice told me it is running great and given it me back buggered!
Thanks///

Just what part of your research lead you to believe that a Power Commander (love that name ) can load reload maps? As far as I know, the TuneBoy is the only one with that ability.

In so far as your running problems go, your dealer can tell in five minutes which tune you have, and can reload the correct one for you. If the bike still runs bad, some basic troubleshooting is then in order.

Listen to OnD.

Any exhaust system should run with the stock tune just fine. It might run lean and have some backfiring but in the end if you read the info from the manufacturer it will most likely say that you just have to slip the can on and away you go.

The point is that if your bike is running like trash the you more than likely have mechanical problems and not necessarily tune problems.

From what I know about Power Commander: It installs after your ECM and makes no changes to your tune or your ecu. It has no troubleshooting capabilities and essentially tricks your bike into a richer condition. The PCModule itself has maps that you can load but they load into the PC module and work as a by pass on the computer. You may also need to a different O2 sensor because with a richer tune that the bikes ECU doesnt know about it may trigger a fault.

The Tuneboy on the other hand works with the bikes ECU and allows you to create complete maps, do diagnostics and many other little features. You can load factory tunes into the ecu.

Many people use PCIIIs on all sorts of bikes. I am not saying they dont do the job but I am not sold on them for Triumphs. That is my opinion and you still need to do your homework to find something that is right for you.

Here is the comparison on Tuneboy's home page that lists the two products function abilities.

Before forking out your hard earned on a PC or TB you look at some cheaper options to resolve your problems.

1. Has the muffler been installed correctly. Loud backfiring is usually caused by air finding its way into the muffler usually around poorly fitted joints.

2. The Triumph TOR tune if not already installed is worth giving a try. Your dealer can do this in a matter of minutes and cheaply in comparison to a PC or TB.

Try checking the rubber hoses to the air box and throttle bodies. Look for cracks and bad connections. Also check for a plugged up hose. A bug could have nested in one. With only 4000 miles on it when you bought it, apparently it sat for a while.

Don't waste your money on a power commander. Tueboy is the way to go if you plan to immerse into the "do it yourself" repair thing.

Let me know if you do get a tuneboy. I have some great maps for the TwoBros pipe.

You might want to try and start the bike without any throttle at all and let it run for a good five or ten minutes without touching the throttle.

My Mechanic told me to do that anytime that you change your altitude or even after I changed my tune. He told me that it gives the computer time to sink itself and helps it to smooth out.

I am no expert at all, but it is worth a try. I did it to mine after I installed the new Two Bothers on my 01 and got my off road tune for dealer.

Good luck I feel for you.

pitcherd,
not only must you not touch the throttle you must wait until the cooling fan cuts in before you switch off as this at least on earlier Sagem equipped machines is the last thing the ECU senses.

If you switch off before that it will not reset properly.
