Look Out - It's About / Oil

G'day - at the risk of being pillared...

This may be more for the Aussi players..

I had some new Mobil 1, 5w-50 Full Synthetic oil - given to me. I expect it is really for a car. My bike is due for it's tween service oil change, tonight.. Will this oil be ok to use for about 5000 klm.

Thx lots

Harry, most car oils have friction modifiers in them, which is bad for the clutch.

5w-50 is also a bit on the light side for Aussie weather. I wouldn't piss about, get some proper stuff.
Cheers, Simmo

Thx guys, turns out this is no good for wet clutches - guess I'll use it for the car.

Thank God this didn't evolve into another 20page plus oil thread...

Disaster averted! LOCK THIS THREAD before it's too late!

Harry a 5w oil is that low because of the friction modifiers so you were right not to put it in the Sprint.

However, car oils of 10w and above i.e.10-40, 15-50w etc that don't explicitly same they contain friction modifiers are fine. I run either Shell Helix 15-50 or Mobil diesel oil 10-40 in my bikes with no problems what so ever.

Harry

FWIW I have always been on the conservative side of the OIL subject, for well over a decade I have been using Motul oils both semi and full synth.

I used full Synth in my last Gixxer and only use semi synth in my Sprint........52,500kms and great gear shifts in every bike I have used it in.
Which IMHO is always a sign of a good M/C oil.

cheers,
DaveM

As many of you may know, I switched to mineral-based oil intended for diesel motors around the end of April. My motor was dead less than a month later!

(Course, that would be a bit more probative if the oil hadn't leaked out of the giant hole in the bottom of the engine. )

Cheers,
-Kit

Job Done.

G'day all - thx for all the inputs...

Changed the oil last night ( Mobil 4T racing gold cap ) Took 3.5 liters ( with filter ) and is showing a wee bit over the high mark. Rode up from the Gong to work ( Sydney airport ) this am. Maybe it's just me but it seemed to be running just a bit sweeter and the gear changes just a bit smoother.

It had the OEM filter from the last service and the guys at St Peters must have locktighted it on. Of course we didn't have the correct tool so ended up making a right mess of the old filter with screwdrivers, etc. Put Purolator (?) aftermarket filter on that sits about 1/2" lower than the OEM filter. Much easier to get off.. That's it - no more about oil, ever again...
Yeeee ha - bring on the 9th July.. 14 more sleeps..
