Installed: TOR Muffler

I won't lie, I really liked the stock exhaust note. It was aggressive, yet it could have a little more kick to it. I didn't want anything too loud though, because I think that's just obnoxious. From what I read, it seemed like the TOR muffler fit the bill perfectly.

I hadn't really done any work to this bike yet, as it was still so new. The only work I have done is changing the oil at 600 miles, and now I'm at 1,600 miles, so I was excited to get my hands dirty. OK, I wore gloves, but whatever.

The only tools needed are a ratchet, 12mm socket, 12mm box wrench, 5mm allen wrench, and a phillips screwdriver.

Wiha tools are awesome and worth every penny:

First things first, had to remove the seat. What a horrible design. The Wiha phillips was great for this, because it allowed the head to tilt to the side, so you didn't have to have the screwdriver perfectly upright.

This was the first time I had removed the seat, and I noticed I have a "Cycle-Tron" Interstate battery? Does Triumph not have their own branded batteries?

After that it was time to remove the rails for the side bags:

It looks a lot cleaner without any rails - and now it was time to remove the rear fairing:

The excess parts:

With that out of the way, now the rear light/license plate assembly has to be removed:

I got a bungee cord and hooked it around the rear assembly and hung it off the side of the bike:

Now I could work on removing the muffler. It was very easy, as there is a clamp in the back of the muffler (standard exhaust clamp), and then a bolt going across the top:

Removed the bolt and then the muffler just slid right out. I was afraid it was going to be kind of hard to pop it off the two hangers in the back, but I didn't have any problems:

The stock muffler (close) and the TOR (far):

Then it was just a matter of doing everything in reverse. I had some issues getting the new muffler in the hangers, so I ended up spraying some PB Blast on the hangers and it slid right in. Tightened everything down and started it up - it sounded so mean! I couldn't hear any exhaust leaks, so it seemed as if I did everything correctly (it would be really hard to mess this up). It sounded as if it was rattling around when I reved it high while on the centerstand, but nothing was lose. After I put all the fairings back on and put it on the ground, the rattling stopped.

Then I gave her a much needed wash:

Then I went out on a ride...

This is only my second bike, and my first bike R1150, wasn't really a typical high-reving motorcycle engine. When I removed the muffler on that bike and rode around, it was super loud and deep. I was expecting a deeper note on this bike too, but when I went on my ride, it was this somewhat raspy, throaty, yet higher pitched, ridiculously mean sounding exhaust note - and I love it! It caught me off guard at first, but wow, it is addicting.

I don't know if it added any power, but I already had the TOR engine tune on my bike, so it was running a bit rich before. The other week my buddy was following me in his car, and when I accelerated, he said I sprayed him on the windshield. I could also see black residue on the rear tail light. After I installed the TOR and then went on a ride, it was perfectly clean back there, and the bike seems to just pull constantly.

No complaints at all and I'm glad I did it. The exhaust is throaty and somewhat loud when you are on it, but it has no drone, and unless you are accelerating, it just has a slight hum to it. Not annoying at all, which is what I was looking for.

Just thought I'd share...

Is there a noticable weight diffrence between the two?

Also did you pick up a used TOR?

Good write up.

Nope, they are both equally as heavy.

Yes, I was going to buy a new one, but someone offered me their slightly used (roughly 3,000 miles) TOR muffler, so I did that instead.

Great write-up and pics! In regards to the battery, that Interstate battery would have to be an aftermarket I think, because I believe the new Sprints came with a Yuasa as standard (at least mine did).

BTW---gotta love the beautiful Sunset Reds!!

It probably sounds just like the TOR muffler on my Tiger 955, no? Were there any other aftermarket muffler choices available, maybe something under-engine?

I would assume that to some extent it would sound similar.

None that I saw, besides, I like the under seat exhaust. It was one of the deciding factors for me in choosing this bike. I am trying to get my dealer to source me the chrome tips, but so far they haven't had any luck.

The only other exhausts that I have seen are the IXILs (or something similar), Tridents (pricey), or Two Brothers, but I didn't like the way that looked.

Awesome write up! I've been thinking of getting the TOR, since even my wife says my bike is too quiet!
