Coldgear opinion

With winter right on our doorstep here in Sydney, I'm starting to think about appropriate gear to wear under my leathers. My G/F is getting me a merino wool thermal top for my b'day next week but I'd like something else as a secondary outfit.

For those of you who use UA's Coldgear, can you advise if the long sleeve Coldgear is overkill or is the sleeveless top under a tshirt more than adequate?

Winter temps in Sydney range from 6C (43F) to 18C (64F).

A search might just give you some info E.G.
http://www.triumphrat.net/sprint-for...cold-gear.html

Under Armour cold gear works very well. Sleeveless top under a common cotton t-shirt sort of defeats the object of moisture movement.

Really cold wear merino and UA, quite cold merion, cold UA

and as we are now getting to hot weather inthe UK I can report that UA top under my leathers works very well. My top half was considerably cooler than my bottom half. So now I wear the pants too. Cool all over !

Adam, I'm in Western Sydney. In winter our morning temps range from -1 or -2 to 3 or 4. Down to about 7 or 8 degrees, I just where my RJays goretex jacket with the liner in. I have neck warmers for winter that are just sloppy joe material. They are great for stopping wind into your jacket. Below 7 degrees I also put a T-shirt under my work shirt.

If your core body temp is ok, then stopping wind getting into your clothes and sapping heat from you makes a HUGE difference. The neck warmers are brilliant for making the neck of your jacket (and even the helmet) that bit more air proof and keeping your body heat in the jacket.

I generally wear the cordura overpants (I work in an office so where trousers at work). The overpants have some protection/padding and are water proof so the cold air is also kept out. I also have the heated grips on the Tiger which are fantastic at this time of year.

Cheapest way to say warm - Sydney Morning Hearld -Newspaper and when you arrive you can have a coffee and read it.

Got caught a couple of years back from Mildura. It was mid May and warm up north, by the time we hit Kinglake it was 1c.

To stop the chill I bought the "Age" (hey, I'm from Melbourne) and put it under my jacket & pants (upper and lower legs) and inside my gloves. Net result is it blocks the wind but allows your body to stay warm.

But when organised!!

Wearing layers upon layers doesn't really work, you want the body to control the heat so ensure you block the wind everywhere (including your boots if you wear lace ups) Make sure your neck is covered and if its really cold, you use a head liner so as not to get the wind between your head and the helmet.
I find "long johns", T-shirt and light wool jumper with my R-Jays works well for me.
Get yourself some good touring gloves; I have the Triumph ones and rate 9/10 for wind, rain and feel.

Short of that, there are many great products out there but we really don't have that many cold days to really justify spending a lot of money on product promises

Cheers
Poddy

Nothing beats electric gear http://www.widder.com/.

I have the System 2 vest and also heated grips; I'm comfortable to 35 or 40*F. 30*F is tolerable but I wouldn't ride there all day.

Sydney: being a Snowmobiler, I was about to drop some knowlege on you until I saw your winter temps are 6C (43F) to 18C (64F). That being the case, the only advice I'll offer is close the zipper vents on your jacket.

I am with Shemp. Just close the dang vents. 6 to 18C, I am still wearing a t shirt under my Joe Rocket Ballistic Jacket without the liner. I may put the liner in if it is below 8 but not always. Seriously I am laughing at heated gear for that weather.

You can call you "cool" season winter when it goes to -50 and you actually have to park you bike.

Yeah, I agree with 3banger. Widder vests are great. I ride all winter and it's much better now than before I used heated gear.

Mick.
You guys have it good then because it gets down to 5 degrees still and it is June. I have been on the bike since Feb 24 and the warmest it would get is 5 degrees during the day. You either ride in it or you get a short season. Real riding here starts in April and goes to about Mid Oct. That is it, that is the season.

Heated grips, warm leather gloves, riding pants, a bandana for around your neck (like a cowboy but tucked inside the jacket).
