Hi, Guys,
Can anyone supply me with the correct wire colours for Tacho pulse,Speedo pulse, Ignition, Ground and Neutral usually found where wiring plugs into instrument cluster.I have purchased an Engear gear indicator for my 07 Sprint ST and the accompanying info. appears to be for an 06 model as the colours are mostly wrong!
Hope you can help

Welcome

Hi syd.sprintst,
welcome to our Sprint forum here at Triumphrat.net

Sorry I can't help you with your q but we have a bunch of very competent techy tyopes on the board that I am sure can help.

This is a very user friendly place to exchange information and experiences.
I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

I am asking all newbies to take time if you haven't already to familiarise yourself with this website's AUP or Acceptable Use Policy located on the main web page in the black bar at the bottom.

Also the sticky in this forum "Forum Posting etiquette" is well worth a peruse.

Do not be concerned about "what have I done?"

I am just trying to save time and effort these days;)

Thanks and enjoy..............

The tach and speedo pulse are not seperately available at the instrument cluster. All of the thinking is done in the ECU. The ECU drives the gauges via a single two wire CANBUS serial communication link.

Speedo signal comes from the transducer mounted to the top of the transmission ahead and slightly inboard of the drive sprocket. There are 3 wires to the speed sensor. The speed signal is on the pink wire in the sensor pigtail. The same signal is pink/yellow on the harness side of the little triangular speed sensor connector. The harness routes this signal only to the ECU.

For your tach signal you will have to pick off a coil primary. You will find +12V switched (also known as ignition) brown/pink wired to one pin on each of the coil connectors. The drive signals (tach) are green/pink, green/purple or green/black. Pick one. These signals come from the ECU.

Ground is black in the harness but it's easier to find a bolt. It might be a good idea to pick ground up in the same area as the tach and speedo signals and twist the 3 wires on the run to the indicator.

sydsprintst, CLB is describing the same color wires as the 06. Where did you get your info that the colors had changed? By chance, do you have a universal fit unit instead of an 07 dedicated one, and that is what you were going by?

As CLB said, gain access to the wires at the ecu connector for the speedo and tach. You are going to need 12vdc for the unit so you may as well get it from the the red-green connector behind the instrument cluster. there are two red-greens there, but only one of them is switched 12vdc.

I am guessing you will need a neutral signal. The easiest place for that would be the black-white at the connector behind the instrument cluster.

Be careful with your wiring and splicing because the ecu has a limited supply of smoke.

Not knowing your level of expertise I am going to offer a safety tip. Please excuse me if I am preaching to the choir. I have never taught/set up an Engear but I surmise it is similar to the others brands. You are going to have to set the bike on the center stand and do some high RPM runs to adjust the indicator. As a safety precaution, I suggest you secure the center stand to the front wheel.

Thanks guys

Thanks for the advice. I don't know what the story is with the colours. My Engear paperwork says pink is the colour for tacho. I have just returned from local Triumph dealer where his workshop manual has pink directly from fuse to instruments. No such colour on my plug! He also says that colours would not have changed and his book covered all Sprint STs.I saw it on the net somewhere a while ago about the change and took it as read.
It seems you guys know more than the Engear people as they are saying ALL connections are made at instrument. I will try to be patient (always a good idea!) and find the connections as recommended by you and will let you know.
Thanks for the safety tip,
Cheers

On this topic, are there any adapter harnesses available for the 07 08 bikes?

I recall datatool or someone like that offering one some time ago. I gave up, but this past week kept shifting into 7th :D so perhaps it's time to try this again. I just really can't see myself slicing up the wiring.

thanks in advance!

Edit - Dang - it would pay to read the entire thread before posting - I see OnD already referenced the chart below
Ah well, at least it will save the trouble of going off-site to get it! :D

This is the wiring chart supplied by Acumen - the same signals are used for pretty much all brands of gear indicators.
It looked like things changed slightly in 06 - can't really see it changing again for 07?

As CLB mentions these inputs (speed & tach) cannot be taken from the instruments, however I would pick them up at the ECM location as you can get them all (with the neutral) in the same vicinity.

Careful - the 2007 speedo wiring is different than the 2006

Different ECU

Careful - the 2007 speedo wiring is different than the 2006 ..... Different ECU
Fair enough. Then the advice would be to pick up the signals as CLB suggested - some sleuthing might be necessary to determine the exact colours of the wires, but not difficult to identify if looking at origin (like the speed sensor itslef for example)

The best advice - bottom line - MAKE THE INVESTMENT IN A MANUAL FOR YOUR OWN SPECIFIC BIKE SO YOU HAVE AN ACCURATE APPLICABLE WIRING SCHEMATIC.

On a slightly related subject -
Check out this guy's mod, where he actually builds an Acumen Gear Indicator right into the instrument panel itself - he can also change the backlight colour while he's in there. Pretty incredible value at $250 for a combined colour change & integrated gear indicator! That includes the indicator display & electronics!

http://www.motydesign.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2

Looks like he pretty much caters to Hondas but I'm sure it would work on pretty much any panel.
Hmm - maybe I should try something like on the Daytona panel ... :D

It works!

Thanks to oldndumb,CLB and DEcosse for the advice. I would have had no chance installing this gear indicator without their valuable information and advice as all the manufacturers advice was wrong.
After some initial hiccups with the programming it all works fine and I'm a happy man. The only wire I could not find was the Neutral signal. No black/white anywhere and could not detect a change in voltage anywhere on instrument plug when changing into and out of neutral. No probs. It just reads 0 instead which is fine.
Cheers,
