Removing tank pad help

I'm wanting to change out my tank pad. I have one of those Pro-Grip ones which I'd like to replace. Anyone ever remove one of these? I'm thinking of liftiing a corner and going at it with a hair dryer to soften it and pull it back. Not sure what kind of residue will be left and if taking it off will ruin the clear coat/paint underneath. I won't do it if that's the case. Will just have to live with what I originally put on. Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks ahead.

The technique you propose sounds OK just pull it off gently so you don't take any paint with it. Use kerosene to remove the residue followed by soapy water and polish.

I've removed some pretty nasty adhesives from painted surfaces, I work in a glass shop and when people break windows they like to use duct tape or Tuck tape to stick a garbage bag over the hole. First off, I've used solventto remove adhesive before and it did dull the clear coat, although I'm pretty sure a little wax would bring the shine back.

If I were to remove a tank protector I would definitely use a heat gun on low setting to soften the adhesive, start on an edge and peel slowly. A little trick I've learned along the path of removing sticky things is that if you pull on the material at about a 45 degree angle away from center instead of pulling across center and be gentle and patient the results are much better. I think this is because you stress the material less and cause less separation. No matter how careful you are you will always leave some adhesive behind. For the left behind adhesive I would try spraying sudsy ammonia on the left overs and let it sit for awhile. The adhesive should soften and be easily removable at this point. If not try a citrus based cleaner like Goo Gone.

Personally, I wouldn't use a solvent but I can pretty much guarantee that it will both remove the adhesive and dull the finish.

I agree with the hair dryer. For the remaining adhesive, I have used penetrating aerosol oil like Q20 with excellent results.

Try using wd-40 to take the residue off. Won't harm the finish and I bet you already have some.

Sodapop,

I'd recommend against the heat gun. After all, it's a plastic tank!

I would try cutting the doublestick with a piece of fishing monofilament, then cleaning it up with WD-40.

Alteratively, you could use some dental floss.

I used the above technique to remove all the name placards from my Tundra.

Take your time.

Good luck!

Hair dryer on high held about 9 inches away is plenty of heat, work small sections until you peel the offending pad.
Goo Gone removes the residue.
Go to Lowes or Home Depot or something similar and get some diaper soft cleaning cloth to work the Goo Gone and get some Meguires #9 swirl remover or #6 cleaner wax. Use the soft cloth for everything.
Wash the area down with water and dry after you goo gone it and hit the area with the Meguires.
