Gas Leak

I just bought a 1995 Sprint with 8,000 miles on it. Runs Ok on the top end but sluggish on the low and every so often when I park it, it leaks gas out of the airbox. I'm running carb cleaner and its helping with the performance but I can't get my hands around the gas leak, hoses look good. Is something sticking open? Will the carb cleaner do the trick? Replaced plugs and airbox and still have leak.

Welcome to the Sprint

Mark,
Tons of information here, so you've got a bit of reading to do.
Did you have the tank off? And who did this work?
There are many post about a plastic elbow on the bottom of the tank cracking if you do a search in the sprint forum.
Your leak sounds like the tank is too full and the fuel is expanding, then the fuel should run out the over flow hose? But maybe that hose has become disconnected at the tank.
You should have three small hoses for overflow fluids. Fuel=gas tank, Coolant=Radiator reservior, oil blow-by=Airbox.

Did you buy from a private party, if so, do they want to shed any light on the problem?

Where does a 1995 Sprint come from with only 8000 miles?

Welcome

Hi and welcome to TriumphRat.net Mark.

I think you will find the answers in the T3 forum which is where the carby Sprint guys mostly hang out

Wink Thanks For The Reply

Hey thanks for the welcome. It seems carb cleaner is doing the trick. Intermittently when I would put the bike on its side stand gas would leak into and out of the airbox. I think lack of maintenance and riding (from the previous owner) was the problem. Still slower than my CBR 600 but I'm not sure all the junk is out of the carb, occasionally sputters on the low end, but running and idling good.

To the question Where does a 1995 Sprint come from with only 8000 miles? From the garage of someone who like to own a bike rather than ride it.

Thanks for the replies.

Hey Mark, come check out the T3 Sport/Touring forum. Look a little further down the main page and you'll see it. You'll probably get more answers there. I'd guess a sticking float or needle. If the carbs overflow they leak into the airbox.
You'll see some posts from KitNYC on this forum. He's also the moderator on the T3 forum. There are a couple of us who have the older carbed Sprints as well as one of the newer models.
