2001 Sprint ST valve question

Hello first off! I am in North Carolina and may go look at a 2001 ST Thursday. My question centers around the valve adjustment. The PO has paperwork for the 12K service which should cover me for the first two years of ownership. I have done my own service to every bike I have owned. Searching the web I get conflicting information. Does the 2001 ST in the US have to have the cams removed to service the valves? Most sights say no but I have found one or two that state the changes were in the 01 year model.

Anthing I might need to check when I test ride the bike or look for? I intend to keep a fairly long time and put about 6K a year on it. If I purchase I will probably add Genmar risers as I will being going froma Honda Shadow to this bike. Does the seat height pose any problems for people with 31" inseams?

Hey Brat, first off...you are going to love the Sprint. I also used to have a shadow (another great bike). I believe the difference was in 2002 when they went from shim under bucket to shim over bucket...or something along those lines. Mine is a 2001 in BRG. I added a staintune pipe and got it working right with a tuneboy and it has given me many miles of trouble free riding. I also went down one sprocket on the front to give i t a little more pep in the twistes.

I did my own valve adjustment without any hassles and didn't have to remove the cams thanks to the handy little tool that I had my friend make for me.

My bike has almost 40k on it and I have never had an issue with it. I had to adjust one valve that was slightly out of spec at 24k, but that's all I have had to do besides the usual oil change.

I also have the genmar risers on mine and think that they are a worthwhile modification. I would also suggest a different seat. I have the corbin on mine and it is comfy for many miles...the original seat was just too soft for my liking and I was in lots of pain after an all day ride.

Good luck with the purchase.

I read through the forum posting sticky, no conflict from me. I treat people the same on the internet as face to face, with respect. I use the user name Bratman2 because I have owned a little 87 Subaru brat for almost 11 years, Brumby downunder.

Thanks, Trotsky. Seems so much information on the net I thought it would be best to confirm before I jumped in. Sounds like I can do the valves myself, should have 12k more miles to go. The bike actually has the factory Gel seat with it and matching hardbags. Brother has offered to drive me so I can ride back or put it in his truck if I so desire. Probably be riding it back if I purchase.
