Bad Coil...
I just got an email from RICKYT and he says that they found a bad coil as the culprit...the tech states that the coils on triumph and kawasaki products are notrious for going bad if stored for long periods. Anyway hear of this issue?

Thats what the Tech believes. Bike ran good a certain RPMs but not at low. Apparently its going bad and while they rode my bike, the coil worked fine for a minute and the bike ran great but then it went on the fritz and the bike ran like crap. It seemed to run better at higher rpms and if he really redlined it, the problem would go away for a few minutes thn reocur
One weird side note. He originally though I had one cylinder not firing because the middle pipe on the exhaust (Tridents) was soot free and cold while the other two had plenty of heat and a bit of a build up. Only catch was there is only one pipe feeding into three exhaust pipes. The air could possibly sort itself like that. Anyone else have seen this?

I've heard that the twins are hard on coils, but I have not heard that said about the triples.

LOL....you have three header pipes feeding into one, and then feeding into a mid-pipe with three outlets. You do not have three exhaust pipes hanging on the rear of the bike. They are cans/mufflers/silencers.

The coils for the 885 triples are notorious for going bad, but that's not something I've ever heard about the 955/1050 stick coils. My experience with Kawasakis ends with the 1980 model year, so I won't comment on those.
Cheers,
-Kit

I had a long and expensive run in with coils on a 2000 Trophy.
Short answer... The plug lead to spark plug connection was iffy. Unfortunatly they sent me a three lead set, and it was number 4 that was the problem. Tested OK but did in 6 coils over ten months.
Check the spark plug connection...be fussy.
Good luck

I fail to see how not using a coil could damage it.......

Corrosion. I am not sure if these coils are oil filled but I doubt that they are. The weather gets cold outside and things frost. Frost is condensation. THe weather warms up, the frost melts and now you have water in the coil which corrodes.
