Brake issue/675 piston discussion again.....
Okay all. I have already had the MC replace to the 5/8 unit last year. When I have gone to the dealer and had them work the bike over, the brakes felt incredible (compared to before). Long story short, the VERY WELL documented issues still exist over a time period. I have thought about just doing a 6-pot caliper swap, but kind of agree with what has been mentioned about the 6-pots having less 'feel' versus the 4-pots. Besides, I like the Triumph logo!
SOOO, we have had some really good posts/write-ups regarding rebuilding the calipers with the Daytona 675 piston/seals. I'm kinda leaning to doing this myself. My question is to anybody that has performed this rebuild.........
HOW'S IT HOLDING UP??? Is this still a sure fix to our 'issues' or do they return even with the upgrade/rebuild?
Thanks!
Kevin

good post Kev. I have been thinking the same too.
they still feel mushy sometimes. and I don't want to give up the logo either!
mods: one thing at a time! and this one is moving up the list now that the tridents are coming!
anyone try the 08's Speed triple's brembo's? wonder if they'd fit. should!
that would be worth ditchin the logo.
yeah I know... big bucks but there's money on this forum!
Santa where are you!!

I have been running the 675 pistons/seals for about 6200 miles. The brakes have remained firm.
I believe the 08 S3 Brembo's are radial mount.
You could probably use Hayabusa Brembo upgrade calipers if you had $1200 ~ $1600 you weren't especially attached to.

Yeah, the new Speedy's are radial mount, so no joy there. UNLESS, maybe Decosse or somebody can translplant the front to the Sprint?!?
But, back on topic (of my own post even!), sounds like the 675 piston/seals are a good, viable option. Thanks CLB---that's what I was looking for!!
Mine have not been horrible, really, but I do find myself remembering to give the front a quick pump-up when coming to a stop which I shouldn't have to think about. It is a dramatic difference when the pistons are 'exercised' versus when some milage has built up...

You could do a search in the Street Triple and D675 forums and see what the 675 riders have to say about the performance of their calipers.

You know the 675 also weighs alot less then the Sprint plus your body weight is significantly more over the front end then on the Sprint. I am not sure that those brakes would be any better nor am I sure what just replacing the pistons and seals would do.

You don't swap calipers from a 675, you swap pistons. The 675 piston has a surface coating with a lower coefficient of friction.
They have less stickion to the caliper seals than the 1050 pistons do.
BTW, body weight is not a braking efficiency factor.

OND and Calliway-- you guys are spot on. I just remember (and had searched the Sprint forums anyways) we had a few members that did the piston swap. I had not seen or heard anything lately on how that 'upgrade', if you will, has been doing.
Thinking about it, I guess not having posts regarding brake issues after the swap means all is well and they're happy!

Calliway,
The pistons from the Sprints '05+ are the exact same size as the 675's (seals to) The difference between the 2 (at least on the '05/'06 model Sprints) is that the 675 pistons are teflon coated while the Sprints are not coated.
The educated opinion is that the 'standard' sprint pistons suffer from 'stiction' (brake dust, other contaminants etc 'binding' the pistons) the use of the 675's pistons in the Sprint calipers appears to resolve this problem...
dave_m (not our esteemed moderator) made this switch early on and was very happy with the result, unfortunately he was so pi@@ed with Triumph's non-assistance he traded the bike for an Aprilia...
dave did an excellent procedural write up of how to do the swap (I'll try to find it and post a link for anyone interested, or you folks can try the search function for yourselves!
Cheers, G

Interesting that the front brake issue has come up again. I dropped my bike off at the dealer this morning for its 12k service and my mechanic (the owner of the dealership) checked my front brake lever travel and asked if I had had any issues with my front brakes. I have not although there is a bit of travel before they engage, once they do they are firm, no mushiness. I mentioned that I have heard of brake master cylinder issues on the forums and he suggested that I let him try to get Triumph to warranty it out to the 5/8 master cylinder while the bike is still under warranty. I figured sure, go ahead.
Hopefully I haven't opened Pandora's Box.
Speed Safe,
Don
