Fuel Gauge Problems

After filling the tank the past 2 times i noticed that the fuel gauge was still reading empty. After about 1 min it goes up almost all the way. For some reason even after i fill up the last bar does not light up. I am always one bar low on gas after filling up.

Any clue on why this is happening.

after doing a quick search i noticed people saying the CEL comes on when the sensor goes bad. My motorcycle does not have the CEL on.

Thanks
Jeremy

That sounds like a sticking float. Valid signal is sent to the gauges, it just isn't correct.
What's with all the fuel gauge issues lately?

so I've gone thru two more tanks of gas and am still having the same problem with the sticking float.

is there any way for me to "unstick" it or should i just bring it to the dealer. I am not sure where the float is located but would imagine it would involve taking off the tank and maybe even taking the fuel pump out.

Thanks for any help.

p.s. The bike was purchased in may 2007, would this be warranty work?

I am having the same issue with my gauge since last year. It reads full minus 1 bar when full....I have not worried about it since I just need to know when its close to empty...but I am take it up with my dealer when I have time

I have had this problem, fill up 1 bar not showing, I got over this by filling up to what appears to be full then letting the petrol settle for 30 secs after which continue to slowly fill up, you'll be surprised how much more you get in. Your gauge should now show all bars, hope that works for you.

Rde

is right on about getting more in your tank.

I do not have a 1050 but have had many bikes and a lot of them including the Sprint ST will allow extra gas in the tank, if the bike has a centre or main stand which we do then following what RDE says allows quite a bit extra in if you do it slowly.

When filling on the sidestand there is always more room in the tank even if it appears full at the filler neck. This is also the case with my 955 Sprint although my guage shows full anyway.

it is worth a try, it may not be the cause but it will be interesting for all with that issue if it does indeed make any difference or not at the guage.

letting the gas settle and then topping off sounds like it could work but it still doesnt explain why it takes a few minutes for the gas gauge to even start to register that fuel has been added.

If i filled up and instantly when i turned on the bike i was down one bar i would agree. But sometimes i ride for 5 minutes or so with the gas light on after i have just filled up before the gas gauge even begins to show that i have added fuel.

Does the bike use a float to determine the fuel level? Is it possible the float got fuel in it and is to heavy to rise to the top of the tank. I know i have heard of that happening in cars.

Or is it possible that i put one of the hoses that connects under the tank to the wrong port. I know there is some sort of silicone hose under the tank that i may have put in the wrong place.
