Angry Check engine light...

I've had my 03 ST for a little over a year now...and ever since I've had it the check engine light will come on every now and then, and at the same time my gas gauge starts to give false readings (like empty when it's full).

The light went off one day about a month and a half ago and has stayed off, but a sure fire way to get it to come on again is to let it idle for only about 2 minutes after it has been running a good bit. The other day I got off my bike for about 2-3 minutes (left it running....), got back on and the light was on. While riding it today it seems to me that my exhaust is not as loud as it normally is (I have the off-road exhaust).

So what would cause the light to come on for starters, and is the exhaust actually quieter, or am I just dreaming this? Also, can you use the OBD II scanners on the bikes, or do you have to use a Triumph specific one?

Plug it in and get the codes. Start from there. There should be codes stored in its memory and as soon as it comes on again plug it in. Yes you can use generic OBDII portion of the scanner.

There are hundereds of reasons that a check engine light can come on but commonly its a sensor triggering it.

I have the same problem with my '02 Sprint. I bought the bike used and the problem manifested the second day I had the bike. In fact it's the only problem I've ever had with the bike. The code said it is a fuel sensor malfunction. Once the light went on it would stay on until the bike went through several hot and cold cycles and then it would reset, until it happened the next time. I had the gas tank float/sensor replaced (expensive) and it didn't help. For some reason the problem is intermittent. It doesn't hurt the bike, but it's annoying not to be able to trust your engine check light and it's so bright at night that I took to putting a piece of electrical tape over the light to keep it from shining in my eyes or people repeatedly asking me why it was on. When it happens the gas guage goes nuts for a while too.
