Loose Swing Arm Lock Ring

I was cleaning my bike after a ride and thought I would spruce up the swing arm spindle bolt and give it a bit of polish when I noticed that the lock ring under the spindle bolt was loose! Luckily, our friend PeirreOBollox had recently bought the factory tools and was generous enough to share the dimensions with us. Thanks, Peirre.

I used an old 7/8" deepwell socket for the inner adjust ring and had to buy a Northern Tool 1 5/16" socket for the lock ring tool. The rework dimensions are on the pictures.

I used a 5/16" bolt and nuts, welded them together and sanded it down to make the 12mm tool for the Spindle Bolt. The Spindle wrench is a 1/2-13 threaded rod coupling sanded down to 17mm. Total expenditure $16.38 and 3 hours labor.

If anyone wants to check theirs for tightness you should use a piece of wood because anything metalic will scratch the nut.
  • The torque sequence is:
  • Tighten the swing arm spindle inner adjust ring to 15Nm.
  • Fit the lock ring and torque it to 30Nm.
  • Verify that the inner adjust ring torque has not changed.
  • Install the spindle bolt and torque to 60Nm.

NOTE: The spindle nut wrench is not identified correctly. It should be labeled as the spindle bolt wrench.
