08 Tank Paint Rub Off

Just got an 08 Sprint with the metal tank.

Might be me but the paint seems to be rubbing real bad where my knee rests. I know that you scuff the tank (I have had 6 new Triumphs.......) but this is after 300 miles and I can't polish the marks out. Anyone else seen this?????

Smile Tank scuff marks

I have a 06 Sprint and I noticed the same thing after my 1st ride. I wear an Aerostich suit and it scuffed it up pretty good. The next day I brought it to an auto trim place and the installed 3m's clear protective tape on the tank and critical bodywork areas. It cost $75.00 but is well worth it. I have had it on other bikes also and it works great.

+1 on the 3M clear tape. I noticed the same thing on my 06 and contacted Lucas at tankslapper. He hooked me up with pieces for the knee pockets of the tank and the forward portion of the rear cowl just below the tank. I also have the headlight piece and the kit for the painted portions of the saddle bags. The stuff works great and without looking for it you can't tell it's there.

Speed Safe,
Don

Huh, that is interesting. I am the second owner and my tank is perfect. I dont even have a tankslapper on it....

As far as the 08's, I would pay close attention to this. Waterborn paints are a must spray now and maybe they have a problem with the clear, it might be to soft. THis can happen when to little hardner is added so I would photograph, and send copies to the dealer just in case it is a warranty issue. Forward some of those pics ot Hinkley as well.

..... I put the tankslapper protection on 2 years ago and no damage since.

I noticed that my knees were wearing the clear coat before I installed the protection - after only a few weeks.

I think it was my cordura gear - seems a bit like a pot scourer on the paint - the leather seems to be easier on the paint.

Grant.

I use the 3 piece tankslapper kit and the tankbag kit. Never had a problem, the stuff is magic.

Thanks...I just emailed them for an order form...I am noticing that its very light on my tank area the scuff marks which I took out through buffing...but before it starts getting bad I think for $20.00 I will go this route.

Yeah the tank slappers should do the job. I wonder if it had anything to do with the 08s going to metal tanks (as indicated by Triumph.) The surface might be harder and slightly more susceptible to material abrasion. I have no marking at all on my tank. However I do have some scratching on the lower frame where my boot fasteners have made contact.
