Putting on the hardbags....

I've got a 2000 Sprint that I picked up over the winter and it came with a set of hard bags. The bag mounts were detached from the bike and so now I've got to get them on. By the looks of doing this, am I correct to assume that I've got to remove the tail section? And it looks like I may have to remove the turn signals in order to get the bags on the mounts.... Can some one give me a run down on how to get these things on or am I going about this the right way....

There's a scan of the factory instructions here.

Good call. I keep forgetting we have a FAQ now.

I do recall putting on the pannier rails, and I recall cussing a whole lot. Have a few beers handy, 'cause your going to need them when you're done.

SW-Motech and Givi bags were a whole lot earier to install on my '06.

Putting Rails on the easy way

hi,

no need to take the tail off....

Assuming you have the exhaust in the high position currently....
  1. Loosen the exhaust clamp ahead of the rear wheel
  2. Undo the bolt mounting the end can to the pillion peg
  3. Twist can anti-clockwise looking from the back of the bike to bring it down and in towards the wheel
  4. Fit the little bracket between the footpeg and can
  5. Re-tighten the exhaust clamp
  6. Fit bolt into large eye on a leg that sticks up from rail - from the right for the right rail, and left for the left rail. You definitely want the bolt head to be on the outside of the bike for these, not taking the apparently easier option of pushing the bolt through from the inside of the bike after sliding the rail in - don't ask how I know, just trust me
  7. Slide the eye up into the gap cut in the rear fairing. You will need to ease the fairing out slightly to get it over the bolt head.
  8. As soon as the bolt head is inside the fairing, twist the rail along the axis of the rail to allow you to push your bolt back into the void of the fairing, so that the bolt head is now protruding and the threaded tip is flush with the face of the eye
  9. slide the eye up to match the eye in the steel subframe and push the bolt back through both eyes.
  10. Use a slim open spanner to hold the bolt still by sliding the spanner up the outside of the eye leg and into the fairing cut out and fit the nyloc nut on the inside of the subframe.
  11. Loosely fit the two M8 bolts into the front end of the rail and into the back face of the pillion foot bracket
  12. Fit the hex head domed screw through the rear of the rail and into the threaded tube that is part of the indicator extension stalks.
  13. Tighten all nuts.
With practice you should be able to fit or remove both rails in under half an hour.

It sounds much harder than it is.

Hope that helps

Note to self... I have written this so many times I ought to take pictures and make instructions on my album

The previos owner put an under seat exhaust system on the bike, so there is nothing in the way... And, I already took the tail off (no biggie there) so I could see just what I was dealing with.... Thanks for the help all.
