Garmin powered from Powerlet outlet?

I have read a bunch of the threads about wiring up your Garmin to various places on the bike. I will admit I am not much of a splice and sodder guy when it comes to electrical so I was wondering if anyone has tried to put a Powerlet insert on the end of the Garmin power supply and simply unplugging it when the bike it off? Thoughts?

Best to try and find a switched power source, ie running light at front might be OK, but to minimize elec. noise connection direct to battery is best. That is what I have done and it works well except there is no power down effect when turing the bike off. Just turn off at unit.
Cheers, Simmo

Fuse Block

Think you'd be happy with a four fuse switched fuse block. Should eliminate noise and it will power down with the ignition. Wire the lead to the "switch" to the head light wire. Head light power is turned off when cranking the engine so nothing on it will sap cranking power.

Ummm if you go and get the powerlet to 12v standard outlet and plug that into your car adapter for the garmin it should work fine....

Am I missing something here?

Calliway tried that with mine as i said heaps of electrical noise, consistent with engine revs.
Connected straight to battery All good.

I had the same noise issue while using my (tomtom) Ipaq PDA last year connected to my Starcom. The audio was fine while it wasn`t being charged off the powerlet socket, but you need to some how suppress the noise, you`ll need to find an individual solution depending on you setup.
In my case Starcom provide specialist 3.5mm audio cables with inline suppressors.
CAB-4 can be used for satnav and music (ipod) input
CAB-55 is a Y cable specifically for the zumo.

I`m not sure however if the same static noise issue occurs when the zumo is powered from the OEM GPS power source (the plug under the F-RHS fairing) as I have the identical but cheaper OEM tiger cable ready to fit once i get around to buying thezumo.

Can anyone tell me if this power source has the same static noise issue ?

Mine has been powered from the Powerlet socket for the past year with no issues whatsoever. Just make sure you buy one of these (scroll down http://www.powerletproducts.com/prod...wer_cables.php ). I do not use the audio features while riding so I have not encountered any static issues to be concerned with.

As a pure power provider the powerlet connection is solid and easily enough to unplug at rest areas.

Keep in mind that if you leave the bike long enough to worry about bike battery discharge than you will want to take the GPS with you. When the Zumo is "powered off" while still plugged into the bike there is very little battery draw on the bikes system. You should easily be able to leave the GPS connected to the bikes system overnight without worying about killing the bikes battery. But again, if left on this long, you should disconnect the GPS from the mount. The mount with no GPS inserted does not draw any power from the bikes battery.

Ditto that. Hooked directly into the powerlet outlet without any problems.

I use a 2610 powered from the outlet and had no issues without sound.
I used a powerlet plug and wired the garmin lead to it.

I have now bought a suppression lead so that I can use my autocom to receive the voice directions without the static interference that will come with having both bike powered.
