At my 40kkm service my dealer noticed that he could not get the timing right, and took the engine apart and found that the cam. chain was worn and it was changed on warranty.

So today I was at the dealer to pick up some plastic stuff, and he mentioned that there seams to be a general issue with all 1050's, at least up to mid 2006, where the spanner of the cam chain is faulty (I'm not mechanical, and don't understand all of it).

As far as I know Triumph know about the issue, and owners will get this fixed under warranty. I had it done, but as they later found that it it have to do with the spanner they will have to take the engine apart again at 60kkm, which is a 6 hour job - they are looking to see if they somehow can get Triumph to swallow it as a warranty job even if the bike is 3 years old.

This isn't anything new from Triumph my 96 Sprint had a horrible cam chain tensioner failure at 30k "the dealers response was the blades that hold the rub strip were made of low grade steel this isn't the first one he had seen". Now I own a nice boat anchor...all the valves smashed the pistons due to this little whoops.

Lets wait until some members have had a chance to get more info.

Casper, since you are the originator, any chance that you could get a little more specific info from your source?

96sprintrydr, are you certain about the metal blade? This design is not unique to Triumph and all that I have seen had blades made out of some sort of synthetic material, certainly not metal. But, then I've not been into a 96.

I'm as sure as the parts of sharpnal I dug out of the housing. Piss poor material.

The only thing I know is;

At my 40kkm service he was not able to get the timing right, and after taking the covers of the engine he found out that the cam chain was slack, and pulled roughly 10mm longer than it should be - as far as I remember, this happened in June last year.

This Saturday I was there and he told me that it comes down to the spanner (is that the right word/term) of the cam chain, which is not constructed correctly. In the last 2 months he have changed it on 3 ST 2005/2006 engines under warranty - 2 did not have the problem, but had the 'operation' done as he had them in anyway, and one showed the same signs as mine did (hear say information). I would say that if Triumph covers it under warranty on 3 bikes then it is something they know about.

I was told - my bike is now at 52kkm - that I should not be worried driving it until the 60kkm service.

I rode 40kkm with this issue without any problems, except that the last 5-10kkm the engine wasn't running smoothly, now (still) it sounds ok. There was absolutely no problems at the 20kkm....

Currently my problem is that it will cost me a fortune to have this fixed if Triumph does not cover it, as my bike was 2 years old in July last year.

The problem here is if you go to your dealer they will play dumb (eg "what cam chain problem is that?"). I had this response for months regarding the rear suspension linkage problem prior to Triumph making it official. The dealers use the same WEB access thing we do to see if a particular VIN has outstanding warranty work. Having a pro-active dealer who chases these things up is a very rare thing, you are lucky indeed.

Absolutely no clue, as I have no mechanical knowledge. But he told me that he needs to get the top of the engine to fix the issue.

The more I've been thinking about it, the more nervous I get - I'll see if I can find time to get around the dealer (120km away) this saturday to get more information about what exactly the problem is.
