I noticed on older sprint st and rs models and with BMW motorcycle scheduled maintenance charts...that you have to either check the cam chain slack or you have to replace the chain guide rails in the case of BMW at 36k miles. So maybe its something thats a wear item and was not listed in our maintenance guides on the 05-07 model bikes. What do you guys think?

We have not had any cam chain issues on any 1050 (or 955) engine yet, and we work on some fairly high mileage bikes. Several other dealers I talked to said they had no cam chain issues either, so it may be an isolated problem. Every once in a while any vehicle may have an oddball issue not typical of the breed.

Hi Everyone... it's been a while since I last logged in, so hi again.

Firstly, sorry for reviving an old thread though I think it's add further value...

With regards to cam chain and tensioner replacement/longevity.

I'm currently up to ~135k km's (~84k miles) on my 05 1050, I'm still on my original cam chain and tensioner.

At this stage, I'm only just starting to hear some noise.

Is this in line with what others are seeing?

Actually, the Honda Pan European has a rubber toothed cambelt, 90,000 mile change intervals, my friend has one and it now has 112,000 on the clock, still on the same belt which he is now about to replace, pretty impressive.

Well, that makes me feel better! I got reading this thread from a couple of years ago, and was thinking I was going to have to do some digging to make sure my newly acquired '06 was healthy! Good to hear it's not the norm!

not impressed

ive got a 2005 sprint st and at 45000 mile i am on my third cam chain, Triumph werent interested in helping to pay for repairs, and just kept telling me how good the engine was, i use it as a second bike now, cant affort to keep paying to replace the cam chain, Triumph at hinkley are the most unhelpful people you can meet, not impressed at all

I changed yesterday my cam chain at 60.000 kl.on my 2005 ST
What I found strange is TRIUMPH sent a complete set, so chain, sprockets and tensioners.
So they know something is wrong, otherwise they will not sent a set.
Normally a chain replacement is enough

Samal, not unusual. Chain and sprockets go hand in hand and a tensioner should be done along with a new chain. Smart economy if you ask me. It's like when you do a timing belt on a car such as Audi or a Porsche 928 you do the water pump not because it's leaking just because you there and you ALWAYS replace the tensioners when doing belts or chains.
