Unique Problem

I am having a moment of honest and opening up to you all so please don't laugh at me. but....Anyone else have this issue, I am badly claustrophobic as a result I have difficulty wearing full face helmets. My anxiety level goes up, my heart rate triples and I get to the point where I feel like I am going to throw up. Its not bad when I am riding aggressively or in heavy traffic because my attention is focused elsewhere. But on leisurely back road cruises, the problem hits. My temporary solution while riding is to lift the shield on the helmet and ride until the wind bothers my eyes. (I ride with Ricster alot and I bet he hasn't noticed me doing that) but I do it constantly at low speeds, in traffic, stop signs and lights. Anybody else have this issue. Is there a better helmet than my Suomy Explorer for this problem.

I am looking at the possibility of a second bike and am eyeing a Speed Triple or an America, but the fact that the Speed Triple is a bike that one needs to wear a full face helmet when riding to not look goofy on is a it of an issue. I am looking to be able to leisurely cruise back roads without problems and the America is my choice right now for that reason. If I could solve the problem, I'd expand my bike selection choices.

I plan to take a few long trips this year on the Sprint and am really concerned about how I'll be able to handle extended tiime in the saddle wearing a full face.

Would this kind of helmet help? A guy I work with wears one. When you see someone wearing it with the shield down it looks like a full-face helmet.

Hi Patrick,

I could honestly say I never knew you were claustrophobic and never noticed you having issues with your helmet when we ride. I would never laugh so I am surprised you never said anything. I think you should try and treat the condition. There are several things you can do..you can take medication for it...which probably isn't a good idea being on a bike...or you can seek hypnotherapy where they can bring you back in time to the event in which caused you to have this disorder and make you see it with adult eyes and make you overcome this fear. People have this dis-order from a childhood experience..maybe you played a game that caused you to fear tight spaces etc....but I would seek a treatment and solution rather than a helmet type and cure it once and for all. Just my 2 cents.

Glasses

I am somewhat claustrophobic (although I'm not sure I can spell it?) but my full face helmet has not bothered me. That said, I do ride most of the time with the shield up to the extent practical depending on speed, and I always wear sunglasses with interchangeable lenses -at night I use clear lenses. I like the wind on my face, additional ability to hear the engine, etc. Yes, bugs can be an issue, especially wasps
Good luck

Thumbs up Eye glasses

I find that wearing a pair of eye glasses and lifting the shield for fresh air flow does the trick for me.

Ricky T, A phobia is a physiological response to a psychologically imprinted trauma (usually from childhood.) There's nothing to laugh at and it's a fairly common malady among adults. Many of us have some form of phobia to certain varying degrees. I have a mild fear of electricity (or more precisely, fear of getting shocked) so I often look like a six year-old girl who's just seen a spider whenever I have to deal with my battery or wiring (even sometimes when I know there's no live current.) Some people are cured of their phobias, most of us learn to manage them and a few just have to learn to live with them. People can be fearful of odd things. Clowns are a surprisingly common fear for some people. I even had one friend who was afraid of bunny rabbits. OK, I snickered at that one a little bit.

I would go with ricster on this and try some treatment under the supervision of a licensed therapist. But while you're working on that, I would suggest looking at modulars (flip ups.) It still offers full-face protection but you can lift the entire front portion up when you're stopped or moving slowly. I would recommend that before trying the one pictured in Shemp's post because it offers no chin protection in a crash. And a significant percentage of serious crashes involve injury as a result of impact to the jaw and lower facial region.

Something like this one might afford you the protection you need while giving you the "space" you want to feel a little less constricted.

Hope that's helpful. Certainly don't want you to miss out on riding this summer.

You might be interested in a Schuberth J1. Full face protection with open face visibility.

The downside is apparently it's not legal for use in the US, but given the number of people here who ride with novelty helmets and seem to get away with it, I can't imagine a cop giving you a hard time because your helmet isn't DOT approved. Also, since they don't sell them here, you'd have to import one.

With the 1050 triple and a set of Tridents on the Sprint, hearing the engine has not been much of a problem.

Now why wouldn't the DOT approve that...
I'm sure you can find a small DOT sticker to fix that.
This looks like a great solution RickyT...

I have yet to hear of a cop examining a full-face helmet for the DOT sticker. If you get pulled over for doing 135 in a 65, I doubt the first question is "Is that a DOT approved lid?"
