Plug Problems I cry FOUL
Plug Problems I cry FOUL
Ok I am my 4th set of plugs, and I am getting pissed. I just put the TOR on and had her re-mapped TOR off raod on Sat. Would not start on Sun after I started her for a friends to hear tyhe new TO for a few mins . thought this would STOP the problem. Here is the common dominator in all this. If I start her and do not let it warm up for to fan temp, 10-15 mins they seem to foul and she will not start. Temp has been cold here but Sunday was 55. I take them out and they are all wet and black. Put new ones in and she fires up. ANY IDEAS. the bike is an 05 with 3000 miles. the ECU was replaced when I got her new in Aug 07. Injectors? Coil packs? Too much/less fuel pressure? She is still under warranty.

Hey Jeffro
If it ran fine before the tune update and now it runs like poop and is fouling plugs maybe something happened when they put the tune in. I don't know if its possible but do youthink they put an 07 computer on the bike? Like I said I don't know if its possible or not but the 07 computer is supposed to have an updated ECU for easier starting and better fuel economy. If this is true then maybe the TOR tune is different for the 07 vs the 05 and then they might of loaded the 05 Tune which wouldnt work with an 07 comp. Do you follow my logic? I have no idea if that is even possible but its under warranty so I think I would take it back to the dealer.
frustrating heh?

It was fouling 3 sets before the TOR Tune. But thats wahts I was thinking about the 06-07 ECU and Tune. I follow ya bud. If it happens again I am gonna take to another dealer. I have talked to them about it and they said SOMETHING is wrong. Can a 06-07 ECU work in a 05? O and D where are YOU ?.
ps My Jacket should be done soon

I have no idea about whether they could work or not. One would think that if the engines are the same the only thing that would keep it from not working would be mounting and plug ins. For sure I would take it back to them and get it working warranty is warranty.
Does anyone know if you can see a serial number on the computer relatively easy? That would tell you. According to bike bandit there is only one part number 5567496-001. Hmmmm intersting conundrum

I'd check the air intake temp sensor, and the coolant temp. sensor. It's interesting that it takes 10-15 minutes to come up to temperature.
Re the ECMs. I believe some have the barometric sensor incorporated into the ECM itself, while I believe later models use a remote sensor. I think the earlier ones were stamped MC 1000, later ones MC 2000.
Just some ideas

Dealer
If your bike is that low on miles and the shop did the TOR install and remap etc then you should get them to fix it period.

1) An '07 ECU won't work on an '05 without an entire vehicle harness, 07 instrument cluster and o2 sensor (which has smaller threads). It's not likely they did that.
2) An '05 ECU cannot be forced to accept an '07+ tune. That's not likely either.
The '05/'06 ECU's don't compensate for injector bleed down and often start rich. The '07+ reads down time from the RTC in the cluster via the canbus and calculates startup fuel requirements.
The '05/'06 system runs open loop anywhere above idle. The mixture is set to the rich side for margin against detonation.
The '07 system runs closed loop up through cruise. A leaner mixture can be run (and is) on the closed loop system. Plugs run cleaner on '07+.
All that said, some bump the '06/'06 plugs up one heat range. Ask your dealer about that.
Your dealer should have loaded tune 20106 for TOR with precat headpipe and SAI. Ask about that too.
If all else fails, try the stock 20104 with your TOR. Maybe your machine ran to the rich end of the distribution when stock.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple factoids I missed on the first round:
1) Never start your bike if it isn't going to run long enough to warm up. It takes a little while to warm the exhaust and o2 sensor. During this time you are running rich and sooting the plug. It won't start to burn clean until the loop closes and the mixture leans.
2) The '07 ecu maps are restricted to the operating RPM range of the engine. The '05/'05 maps go to something like 12k. I believe Triumph didn't initially know where redline was going to be set. The '07 tunes use the additional columns to add flow detail around resonant points.
The few reports I've read of Tuneboy users bumping redline up on 1050's did not have happy endings.
3) The '07 ECU's also "feature" maps that have certain cells locked against editing. An edited map will not load. The latest Tuneboy/TuneEdit circumvents this. I find it ironic that the factory tools can load factory maps but not tweak them on these bikes.
