Amen to that

Thanks guys, there are standards. The Exide is AGM, FA=factory activated, Super Crank= SC
12 = size BS = post location I'll be sure to verify when purchasing
Exide makes batteries for many brands and it seems Yuasa-exide is one of them. Hmmm can't seam to find any SuperCrank.

There are really only four major battery manufacturers in the world and a host of off Asian manufacturers.

Exide which markets under a ton of brands
Johnson Control - Interstate and a host of other brands
East Penn - NAPA Batteries (Canada and Western Seaboard US), Deka, Power and many others
AC Delco - under the AC Delco Brand and a few others. Probably the smallest of the manufacturers.

Yuasa is a Japanese Manufacturer that produces and labels many sport batteries for whoever needs them. Exide and East Penn both market Yuasa in NA and also distribute them. 5 years ago East Penn put our there own line of AGM Power Sport Batteries and for the rest I am not sure but Interstate has their own now as well.

Be warned

I sourced a replacement battery for my YTX12-BS from a local battery place. The direct replacement according to them is a CTX12-BS. Which according to the nomenclature would appear to be correct. BUT when I mention the Sprint has the battery fitted laying on it's side the battery guy said the CTX12-BS must not be fitted this way or it will leak. Refer attached pic, he says if they have the caps circled in red they will leak if fitted anyway but up. I don't doubt his word so I'm going to get the Yuasa OEM.

Cal will respond when he reads this, but the way I understand it, a TX12-BS battery is a TX12-BS regardless who manufactures it.

The first letter is the manufacturer/vendor designator. For example, Y= Yuasa, C= Yacht, YTX=Interstate, ES=Walmart, etc.

I have said it in about 100 threads but I will say it again because I beleive you did the right thing by posting because you were not sure.

So, the Sprint must have an AGM battery which would be specified on the battery. Some of the offshore manufacturers will use prefixes that are similar to quality batteries but arent the same.

I am not sure what the "X" usually means AGM in part numbers and manufacturers seeem to be taking that as a standard identifier.

Deca, East Penn: ETX Yuasa: YTX You get the picture. By that picture I would say that it is not a AGM battery as they usually have screw caps that make an air tight seal. AGM batteries were made with that in mind. You can run them upside down and they dont leak as they dont have any acid floating around. It is absorbed into the glass mat..... cough cough Aborbed Glass Mat.

So in your case I would not lay that battery on its side. It will leak among other things.

OnD is partially right in that the "12-BS" is the universal number. The 12 is the BCI group size and the BS is the stud location and style. The letters before the 12 can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Hope that helps.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread with what happened to me. I have a 2007 Sprint ABS with 16,800 miles that was slow to start and finally wouldn't start yesterday afternoon at the mailbox at the end of my street. I'm thankful it was a short walk! Anyway, I have the battery monitor that OnD suggested and for the last couple of weeks, it was green until you turned the switch to the "run" position then it was more of an orange color.

I put my battery on the battery tender every night when I get home from work and my commute is about 45 miles each way. This morning, it cranked enough to start so I drove it straight to the dealer and after checking the charging system, they replaced the battery under warranty. Now the monitor light is green when you turn the key to the "run" position.

Thanks again to everyone on the forum and a special thanks to OnD for his troubleshooting tips.

-Keith
