ODB II Protocol for '06
Can someone confirm the DTC transfer protocol used by the '06 Sprint is not the CAN.
I just picked up an ODB II reader from this vendor and it works awesome on my Jeep, but does not support CAN protocol. Just wondering if I can use it on my Trumpets.

CAN Protocal or Controller Area Network is only manditory on vehicle PRODUCED in North America. If the bike or car is produced anywhere else it is only out of common courtesy that it comes OBDII or CAN enabled. If you have a scanner that you can plug in go ahead. You just wont get a response if it is CAN bike vs a OBDII bike. I have a Snap On MD2500 Red Brick that I use but I have never tried to plug it in on the bike.

I guess as part of the regular service, I can plug it in and read any DTC's, even if the engine light isn't tripped. I'm hoping it's impossible to erase the tune itself .

PS. To make room for incoming messages, I just cleaned out my mailbox...unfortunately, I did not receive the most recent private message from a very informative poster.

You can't erase the tune. When they retune your Triumph they are hardcoding a memory chip on the PCM. That tune becomes the default. Your computer takes input from you bike and makes adjustments. So if you have a component that is not running optimally the computer can make minute adjustments using the feedback from the sensors to componsate for those imperfections. Now when you take out your battery all those little adjustments get erased and you are back at square one to whatever tune is loaded. Each vehicle will relearn relatively quickly. I found that my Sprint relearned in just a few rides. It started like garbage and ran super ruff for about 2 minutes then cleared up.

Some scan tools such as the Snap On Modis and the OTC Genisys are 2 way systems and you can overide certain aspects of computer controlled parts like the EGR valve or HVAC systems. Even though you can take control of those parts you cannot change the tune even though those tools are capable of updating a PCM with OE information.

There is lots more but that is the quick version.

Excellent! Thanks for the info Calliway and the PM from The Man. I can approach this with more confidence now...great replies!

I always wanted an OBD reader and the Jeep dealer finally pushed me over the edge when he wanted $101.50 just to read the codes.

Yeah anyone who owns a jeep should own a reader. I have had 4 jeeps and I love them but they are a tinkerers dream. Now I have a 02 Ford Explorer Limited and well, that is why I have a Scan Tool - lol.

Jeeps:
1946 Willys
1975 CJ5
1951 Overlander Wagon
1985 XJ

Greatest Trail vehicles ever made. IMO.

(sorry little thread hijacking).
