I have a 2000 Sprint ST that on two occasions has had a high idle (~1500rpm) when warm. Once it did it after it sat outside and it rained overnight. After riding it for quite a few miles and into warm dry air it eventually went away. Rode it a few times after that with no issues, everything normal.
Fast forward to this morning and I rode to work in very damp air, so damp my helmet face shield and coat were wet when I got to work, ~6 mile ride. The Sprint went to a high idle at work ~ 1500-1600 rpms. Today was a nice day, it cleared off and everything dried out. Rode it home tonight and everything was just fine, no issues.
Both times the Sprint did this it accelerated and ran just fine, just would go into a high idle in neutral.
It is apparent to me that damp conditions are causing this and am looking for input as to what is going on. Your thoughts
Kit is right. There is no apparent relationship between an air leak and the air moisture.
That said it could be that the IACV is dirty and that in wet condition it get stuck. Well, not much likely though.
What is a lot more likely is a problem w/ the water temperature sensor. You might want to clean it's connector up and check for corrosion.
The idle rpm is linked to the water temp by a specific mapping table.
Also make sure to check as much of the wire as is accessible when checking the connectors. It could be some bad insulation on part of a wire causing an inadvertent connection and/or ground when it gets wet.
Apparently the moisture had nothing to do with the fast idle as it started doing it again the other day o a nice warm dry day. It is doing it all the time now and I will replace the IACV hoses first which hopefully corrects the problem.
Went in to replace the hoses and they all at first glance looked fine, however the first one I removed came apart at the base and is clearly rotten. New hoses installed and a 10 mile test ride all seems well. Thank you all for your help
Short answer is no. Basically doing one step at a time and mainly figured that once the one hose fell apart that was the issue. The other part is I was too lazy.
My high idle happened intermittently. Even after replacing iacv hoses. Resetting the tps seemed to help for a little while. I replaced a faulty ignition and it also went a way for a while. I recently changed the battery and it has not been an issue since.
