Folks, if you want to experience the sort of riding you see Scotland, try western North Carolina and western Virginia. The mountains and Piedmont (central) areas of both states resemble Scotland to a remarkable degree. The whole time my wife and I were Scotland, we talked about the similarities. Scotland's coast are different - and quite fantastic. You will also see a spectacular historic coastal sight and then right next door to it, a trailer park. Also kind of like here.

We have caught a couple of nice warm days here in Virginia last week and managed to slip in a few rides. I managed to have the cold/flu from hell and didn't get out as much as I wished. This is the time of year I envy the Gulf Coast and far West.

As far as the scenery being the same, I'll take your word on it. But, what I really want to experience, is the lack of population, and lack of development. Kinda would like to get back to "old school", I guess you could say? Plus, I think to substitute a North Carolina ride for a ride in Scotland, would be missing out on the people, their culture, heritage, and the simple history of how old some of the architecture is around there.

After doing some research, I've discovered that if I plan far enough out, stay for about a week and a half, my round trip ticket should only cost less than $1,000 from Dallas, TX, to Heath Row airport in London. Thought I might could rent a Sprint ST in London, ride to Scotland and back, and still have enough time to see the scenery along the way.

BTW, I'd LOVE to have some input from you guys overseas to as how feasible a trip like this would be?

Cortez, how expensive was it to eat and live for a day or two in Scotland?

Man KC, that sounds awesome. I am heading to England in May and I will be looking for a bike to rent for sure... I wont be there long enough to do a ride up to Scotland but will go back for specifically that reason.

The Show with DG was ok. There was lots of pub talk and not enough riding. I also thought it was funny that the engine noise on the bikes was never much over 3ooo rpm before they shifted. I would of loved to hear one of those ST's get into the "howl" rpms. I also was a little dissappointed how they "rock and rolled" every dang riding scene. I don't think of screaming guitars when I am thinking about riding through Scotland on my ST - lol. Just my opinion.

One thing about Scotland especially if you intend to camp IS THE Bl@@dy midges they are notorious for biting the crap out of you!

Funny really cos you don't expect that sort of thing in the colder climates but believe me they are world famous! so if you intend to camp especially near any lochs etc take some insect repellent! also Scotland as a rule can be a bit on the chilly side, having said that some of the scenery is breathtaking and the coastline is amazing, they do have a habit of plonking real eyesores in some picturesque locations tho

Oh and they Dont like the English! but seem to love Americans tho

Good point Femural on the colder weather. If I remember correctly on the show it was in the 40s and raining followed by 80 and sunny. I guess Scotland must be kind of like the rockies in July. You better pack shorts and a winter jacket. You just don't know what your going to run into (weather wise) one day to the next.

While I like South Carolina, history there goes back a couple hundred years, while in Scotland it goes back a couple of thousand years. Twisty roads are available everywhere. History is across the ocean.
