Yesterday morning my battery died while I was getting ready for a ride (typical ). It was due for replacement as it's close to 3.5 years old. Anyway, got myself a new battery, plugged it all in, started the bike and it started first go but I now have the Check Engine Light on and am not sure why would it light up after changing the battery?
I checked all sensors and nothing seems to be loose. I have also ridden the bike for 5 hours with the check engine light and didn't notice any problems. P.S. 2004 Sprint ST 955i
I think I have done more than 3 start-up cycles after fitting the new battery yesterday but I'll try again.
The only other thing I have noticed since this check engine light came on and while riding yesterday was the RPM needle was dancing when the bike would sit on 4000-5000RPM in 6th gear on the highway. It wasn't cutting out or anything just the RPM needle wasn't stable. Not sure if the ECU went bananas in the time I unplugged the old battery and went to get a new one (over 2 hours of not being connected to any battery).
Just a note - it's not three 'start-up' cycles to reset the ECM codes; it's three 'heat cycles'. The engine temperature has to be close to ambient between cycles.
Yep, that's a very important point, as I wasn't waiting long enough for the bike to reach ambient temperature when doing the start-up cycles, so last night I have done the 2nd cycle and this morning completed the 3rd one and the check engine light turned off this morning. All is good now
I did get the check engine light just before the old battery died, so I think the ECU was sending me signals about the low battery for a while.
A voltage meter would have been nice, but I must say I have been very pleased with the LED Voltage Monitor I got from Roadster Cycle. It's short money, easy to connect and Jack is a treat to do business with.
I got myself THIS OBD cable and installed TuneECU on my Windows 7 laptop but for the life of me I can't get the ECU to connect and show up on my laptop even though I can clearly see that it's trying to connect through port COM3 on the computer but it keeps asking me to check the cable connection. Are there different grade cables that work on my bike that I need to look for? I tried it with the ignition on and with the bike running but still no go.
I had a similar problem with mine, but it turned out I didn't have the proper driver for the cable itself. IIRC I downloaded the one linked from the tuneECU site and that fixed it.
Yes I tried that as well but after I forced the FTDI driver (which I downloaded from TuneECU website) to load, TuneECU just displayed an error saying "Cannot connect Port COM3", so I gave up on that cable and returned it to the seller.
Got THIS cable in the mail today and it worked straight away after installing the drivers from the CD that came with it.
