intergrated taillights?

hello guys, have a thruxton, asked in cafe section but figure you guys would know best,,im thinkin of puttin an intergrated taillight prob from a ninja on my thrux,,the guys over there say they are hard for people to see what side is blinking and seem in general to not like them,i think it would clean up the ass end alot,,anyway just wondering what you guys think of them and if you have had any problems using one,,i havent really noticed them on the road before,so any input would be cool before i throw the $$ at one

The Clear Alternatives tail light is very clean looking and usually not too bad in being able to determine which side is blinking because the other side stays red. But if you have standard bulbs you would have to install a relay somewhere in your harness so the signal blinks at the right speed (I think. They may have an integrated relay in them so you'd have to check.)

The other thing is that is some states they aren't legal. So depending on how tight your locals are on enforcing illegal modification laws, you might want to consider the consequences. Because lights attract attention they might bring more LEO attention than you want. But I also know several riders who have them and haven't had any problems so far.

Currently have one on Sprint, it does clean up the tail a bit, and it is not to hard to tell which side is blinking as the mother mside stays red. My is a Clear Alt version, with LEDS, and they included a resister to add paraleel to the turn signal so that the blinking is in normal speed. PhxMan

Since LEDs have such a low current draw compared to incandesent bulbs, using standard flasher relays with them will cause an excessively high flash/blink rate.

Using resistors adds to the circuit load and allows the flasher relay to function at a normal rate.

The extra load from the resistors is transformed to heat. They can get hot enough to melt any plastic or rubber that they might contact. Extra care must be taken to ensure that they are not in contact with anything that can melt.

The preferred method to reduce the flash rate is to replace the stock flasher relay with a solid unit (aprox $25) designed to operate with LEDs.

One of the benefits of LEDs is the reduced power consumption. Resistors defeat that benefit.

redninja,

I have a friend that mounted an 05-07 Sprint ST ClearAlternatives integrated light on his Thruxton.
All he did was turn it upside down. The installation looks so good, you would think it was designed to be installed that way.
I did not pay attention to the bracketry, but it couldn't be that difficult.

im yanking my rear fender, plus im a welder so fabbing up a cool bracket will be easy enough, the sprint triangle light is cool, but i really like the v design for the ninja, plus might be easier for people to see what way im turning, not that its blinking for very long though, lol,,did he use the resistors or the relay that was mentioned for the conversion?thanks btw guys
