2001 Sprint started running VERY badly today (un-rideable)... Running rich, will not idle, Check Engine light is NOT on.
I have not yet used TuneECU, but do have the dongle. Without Check Engine light, will there be anything that TuneECU will tell me of value? My thought is a bad temp sender, and TuneECU would show obviously incorrect temp...
The hoses between the IACV and the cylinder head. The corrugated hoses may well be fine, but the PVC(?) ends that attach them have probably cracked. Good, thick, high quality silicone vacuum hose can be used in place of the OEM stuff; it's less expensive and it holds up better.
Just opened things up expecting to replace the hoses. Turns out that the hoses are in Excellent condition - they fit tight, no cracks, still as supple as (submit your own analogy for something that is REALLY smooth and soft, cuz I can't think of one off hand...).
The symptoms again are:
Running extremely rich - plugs are coal black.
Will run only above 2-3000 RPM, and then very poorly.
Symptoms started abruptly - ran fine the previous week.
Check Engine light does not come on.
Questions:
Does the computer hold ODBII codes like a car?
If so, how do I read them (does TuneECU do so?)?
How else to trouble-shoot?
Specific thoughts as to the problem?
IACV may be bad. These bikes tend not to throw codes for idle vacuum related issues.
You can use any OBD2 scanner that supports ISO9441 to read the codes. The fancy ones with a built in car database may be fussy because they won't have Triumph but the format for the codes is standard. TuneECU can get the codes as well as the Triumph proprietary sensor data and configuration settings.
Could be a multitude of things.i would think that a faulty iacv or vacuum leak would not cause the bike to run so rich. You should get the tuneECU program. Youll be able to get data from all your sensors like he said.
OK, finally got it back together and running with TuneECU. As it warmed up it required more and more throttle to allow it to run - still running extremely rich.
TuneECU shows the following: (again, I am holding the throttle open enough to keep it running)
Left "Sensors" column:
Throttle:
1.5 1.16V
O2 sensor:
bike does not have O2 sensor
Idle:
000 -6
9.4% 50
Long term Fuel Trim
Blank
Temperature:
35deg C 2.20V 1.27V
Barometric:
1024 hPa
Engine Load
50%
"Instrument Panel" readings:
TPS:
9
BTDC
5.5
deg. C
58
Idle Speed:
1860
No Error Codes
The only thing that seems out of sorts is the Engine Load reading, but I can't find any information that tells me what "Engine Load" refers to - how it is derived...
Getting back to this, it seems that the TPS is probably the culprit. It was showing "9) with the throttle closed and the engine off. Should it be reading "0" in this condition?
Yes, and you can reset it using tune ECU, very straightforward, just 'push' the TPS reset button. Offhand I can't recall exact location of button but its on the screen where the data appears.
