Question Givi X.01 Helmet - a suitable replacement

I would appreciate your points of view on the following...

The last 5 years, I had a Shoei XR-900. Good helmet, pretty silent, not too heavy, but, lousy ventilation (especially front) and non-removal innards (for cleaning).
The thing fell a few times, also a few times with me in it, and I'm slowly thinking of splashing out some cash next spring on a new one. I always fancied the Shoei the XR-1000, but at 400€ it doesn't come cheap.
Ok, ok, it is the only thing protecting my nugget from close encounters with hard objects like roads and stuff, and as such I am willing to splash some cash on it...

But recently I stumbled across a Givi X.01 Givi web clicky
I thought it very smart that you can exchange the chin-bar with a version with big ventilation holes in summer, and a chin bar which is rather closed up for the winter.
I'm not sure if the ventilation holes on top of the helmet are sliding or take-off stuff... the later would not be good, I would loose those bits...

Anyway, any experience with this system? Any thoughts on robustness? What's your take on such a thing?

When comparing helmets of equal quality and certification, the most important consideration should be a snug, comfortable fit. The only way I know to determine fit and comfort is to wear the helmet for at least a half hour, and do all the standard fit tests.

If you go with the Givi, will you be able to try it on and do a return for refund if it doesn't fit to your head shape?

You have to be careful and verify vendor return policies. I have seen sites that offer helmets with a return policy, but the fine print states that the return must be for another helmet from them....no cash refund/credit card credit. The old days of a liberal helmet return policy seem to be going away.

One comment re that particular helmet is that I don't think it would be authorized for track days.

Thx OnD

I'm buying my helmets from "over the counter" dealers. I like to see what I put on my head.
In general I will be able to wear them, and there is one place that even allow for a test drive...
But return policies aren't that great over here... bought too small, or bad fitting = bad luck...

re. Trackdays, you're probably right, but I could always keep my old XR900 for that I suppose...

Hi Spidey

Nice to see you around more these days mate

No idea on the Givi, I have had Arai's Shoei's, HJC, and a bunch of others including a Brit lid but currently have my scone encased in a Suomy which seems fine but could have more vents for our hot summer but it ain't bad and reasonably priced.

I think there is a pic in one of my albums clicky below.

cheers,

DaveM

+1 with OnD.

Try them on and do the fit test. Back to front - side to side. If it suits (ie vents) and is certified for your region (and either DOT or Snell or both) you are heading in the right direction.

I have 2 HJC's - 1 Symax flip front and a Crevier model. Both the same size but they are totally different on my scone.

The Symax has heaps of ventilation but it a bit noisy at times (but I am OK with that). The Crevier is much tighter, quieter and hotter to wear, which is great for winter.

FWIW If my helmet had been down the road (with contact) I would be replacing it - pronto - your choice though..

The Shoei a my helmet of choice because it fits me as if it were custom made for my head. I have been wearing them for over 15 years. They hold up well, the lining holds up and doesn't fall apart after a few years like my past Arai did. The new Shoei's are cooler than the old ones. MY son has the RF-1000 and I have the X-11. The 11 really puts the air through the helmet. I haven't compared it to the RF-1000 but I understand the 1000 works great with the air flow also. The main thing I consider is comfort and the Shoei has been my favorite. They sure have many new brands on the market to choose from now. Good luck with your pick.

I had ordered this Givi helmet last week and it just arrived today. I'll post a brief review once I give it a try just in case anyone is still interested.

wBW wrote a review on the helmet a short time ago. I always enjoy their reviews and find them quite thorough. They seem to give the Givi high regards...I only wish they were available in the US!

For all of us in Canada and US - you wont find those helmets here and nor will they ship them. They dont meet any NA standards and it states that on the site.
