Trident - Bad Back fire problem

Since I have installed the Trident system on the bike I have had back firing issues. Now things have gotten worst - now I shoot flames out the back when backing off on the throttle.

My pipes have always leaked; the inner pipes are loose which is why I think is casuing the problem. Told the dealer when I got them that this (and being over sized) didn't seem right but just got the "nod off" (yeah I know he monitors this site but this isn't a dealer site so if he reads this don't PM me again; I was the customer)

If they didn't cost me so much money I would send them to the scrap yard but the wife would kill me as it cost over $1000 to get them to Australia.

Anyway, does anyone know how to pull these peices of **** apart and rebuild them?

Anyone, anyone

Cheers
Poddy

is this with the triumph off road tune? if you have a leak long enough the pcm could be trying to compensate for this.

Poddy

You could have a leaky joint and be sucking air in somewhere.

If I were you, I would remove them and offer them for sale on this site.

Did you install, or a shop?

Have you inspected all the joints for leaks, both by feel and visually?

Have you tried removing and reinstalling?

Have you talked to Peter at Trident to work out the issues?

No offense Poddy, but maybe oldndumb has the best idea, and that is to just remove them and sell them. Sometimes if you have an experience where your expectations aren't met, you are better off just moving on

If you are getting backfires….here are some suggestions…

Make sure the original gasket has been removed from the factory joint between the mid pipe and header pipe. The Trident doesn't use this gasket.

Use a high temp silicone seal at the joints…let cure overnight before starting the motor.

Make sure the mid-pipe is aligned horizontally. Check this by using a torpedo level (very important). Don’t go by eyesight. Bike should be on center stand, on level floor.

Make sure none of the clamps are overtightened! This will cause problems.

If a joint is leaking, you can feel it and certainly in due time see "smut" appearing around the leaking joint. I would think that you would have to have a serious leak to cause backfiring.

The dealer may have installed the wrong mapping. I suspect this. After the proper map is installed. The next day, when the motor is cool, start the motor with NO THROTTLE, and let the motor idle for twenty minutes, or until the cooling fan turns on/off three times. DO NOT TOUCH THE THROTTLE. The computer must "learn" the new back pressures.

The Tridents pipes are really a very fine product. Your problems are due to either a bad installation, or you have the wrong map.

I mean no criticism, I only want to lend a helping hand!

Good luck mate!

The problem with my pipes is that the centre of the canisters is what I believe is leaking, it actually turns within the canister, this is how they arrived and didn't seem right at the beginning. The pipes do not leak anywhere else and I sealed them at the joints with a high grade O2 senor silicon (the RED one)

The bike is currently in for a service and I have asked them to check the MAP that was installed and I will take WardenRoss's advice when I install them again.

My expectations where just too high and Trident is too far away for any recourse
and the option of selling them won't sit with my wife as I had to do the big sell to get them.

Last night riding home in the dark a flame lite up the night from the back of my bike hence why I am trying to fix the problem once and for all.

Cheers

Poddy - the can is a fully floating design - whch means the sleeve can move over the centre - that way they never break with expansion and contraction the way riveted cans do

If you can feel a leak between the cente pipe and the alloy end plate it goes in to then just run a bead of sealant around the join as I have said before. I've not come across any leaking here before and to be honest it would be difficult but it can be fixed in two minutes with a little silicone.

Flames and back fires come from unburned fuel in the exhaust gas igniting on the hot exhaust so normally this means too much fuel in the mix - which points to the tune being too rich and not to the exhaust at all....
