Name that sound...
So when I first turn the key, I get a whine for a few seconds. I've been assuming that the injectors/fuel lines need to pressurize and that's what I'm hearing. It used to be that the noise disappeared (can a NOISE disAPPEAR? ) while the engine warmed up, and off I'd ride. Now, the noise continues for quite a while (at some point I'm going to fast to hear it anyway).
Not long ago I had a warranty repair done after I had fuel spewing all over. I had stainless fuel valves installed in place of the plastic.
Anyone care to interpret this bit of data?

Correct
It is the ECU starting and the fuel line being pressurized.
I always hit the starter after that noise is stopped.

The whine is coming from your neighbor because he doesn't have a Sprint
or
It is your EMS uploading your location to the Mother Ship
or
It might be your fuel pump starting to complain
or
It might be the regulator acting up
or
Might be time to get a scan.
I vote for the Mother Ship.

So, you're thinking since this is New Mexico (and Roswell isn't far down the road...) that really my bike is an alien clone?

As DaveM says, I wait until the noise stops then hit the starter, always comes alive. The noise has been there since new.
It's just the bike letting you know she missed you.

I've always done the same. It used to whine very briefly, then I'd start, it might whine again a little bit but go away pretty soon. Now the whine doesn't seem to go away.

When the whine goes away your bike won't run anymore.
Pumps run constantly unless they don't see a crank signal. Your fuel system charges up when you first turn the key(for a predetermined time). When you hit the starter it once again turns on , you just don't hear it. I believe this is the same for most all fuel injection systems. I believe the volume of pump noise depends on it's age, temperature, and possibly tank volume.

The noise you hear is...TaDa! The fuel pressure regulator. It a spring loaded pop off valve sort of. In unaltered F/P regulators when it reaches about 40 psi the lines and everything to the injector nozzles are at 40psi and ready to go and closes. That's when you hear the noise stop. This is why when you turn the key on wait for the sound to stop BEFORE hitting the starter button. If you hit the starter button before it shuts off you won't have optimum fuel pressure to the nozzles. Hard starting and longer cranking being the result.
The Regulator does just what it's name says. It is responsible for maintaining the proper fuel pressure to the nozzles by cycling so when the mapping tells the injector to open, that cylinder gets the full nozzle shot at the proper time. Without the minimum amount of pressure the shot instead of being a nice spray pattern will be more of a dribble. Not good.
Some regulators make more noise than others. In my vintage bike if a customer complained about a noisy regulator Triumph would change them out for a quieter one. There wasn't anything wrong with the loud ones though and in fact I have my stock quiet one on a shelf with a modified loud one on the bike which has run just fine all these years.
