Speaking of horns....

I don't want to hijack anybody else's thread, so I'll start my own....

Does anybody know how many amps the stock horn on an '04 955i draws? I'm considering replacing my factory meeper with a single Freeway Blaster (5A), & I'm wondering if a relay is really necessary.

Thanks,
-Kit

Kit,
I cannot answer re the current draw of the 955 horn but I can tell you that the horn wiring on my TBS is IMO way under rated.
It is probably the same on your bike too.

I installed a relay in the circuit, using the OEM horn wires to trigger the relay and ran a heavier fused wire to the battery and now the standard horn (which happens to be a Fiamm) sounds like it should.
If you want to upgrade the horn, a relay is a must.

horns

If you go with a single "Blaster" you can probably get away without a relay. You will be much happier if you buy the pair (hi and lo tone),and a relay. Guaranteed south Florida blue hair tested and approved (fortunately I don't live there any more).

The problem isn't the amount of current available. It's the amount of current passing through the switch. If you use a horn with a higher draw than the switch can normally handle, you risk burning out your switch. Then, instead of a cheap relay, you have to replace a very expensive handlebar switch.

The horn will work without the relay, but you do so at your own risk.

That being said, if you want to measure the amount of current, it's pretty easy to do so. Just get an ammeter and put it in series with the horn, then press the button. The connections to the horn are under the cockpit, and it's just a couple of quick detach connectors. Remove one, attach it to one lead of the ammeter, and attach the other lead to the horn. Then go beep, and if your meter jumps backwards, reverse the connectors.
