Thumbs down Penske shock

Hi,

I'm a seasoned Triumph rider but new to the list, so forgive me if I bring up a previously discussed topic. I just bought a Penske shock for my '01 Sprint ST and it comes with a great manual discussing all the adjustment possibilities and how to service it, but not a word about installation. I've taken my stock shock in and out a couple of times, so that's easy enough, but I'd like advice on how/where to place the remote reservoir (comes on the end of about 8 inches of braided hose). Are there brackets available? Anybody have similar experience?

TIA,

Paul.

I think stlakid has a Penske shock. You might try emailing him. You won't be able to PM for another few posts..

Oh! and welcome to the forum..

I don't have an clear pics of it, but I mounted the res. for my Olhin on the right rear foot peg where the muffler bracket attaches.

Sorry, can't give you any input on a Penske as I can't afford $800 for a single shock! Personally I don't understand how they can justify the price for these shocks considering a set of coil over Koni's or Bilstein's for my car (4) cost about $600 with similar adjustments! Obviously I'm missing something here or I'm just a cheap bastard!

I bought a Daytona rear shock off E-Bay for around $50, but haven't taken the bike apart to see what kind of mods will be necessary to run that yet. As stated before; I just can't seem to rip this bike apart as I enjoy riding it to dam much!

An Alternative

phsammut,
an alternative to a new aftermarket and costly shock (if you can afford it then this isn't an issue) is to go to a motorcycle suspension specialist, I am sure there would be one in a capital or large city in your state, and have them re build your Showa stock unit.

Some will tell you they are not rebuildable, which is true unless you have all the right gear which specialist MC suspension guys should have.

My own shock was rebuilt in this way:
revalved, regassed and oiled etc and you could have a different spring installed, mine is the stock spring with a 5mm spacer.
My shock has been made and adjusted to suit my weight and my riding style.
All this was less than AUD $200.00. The shock is now brilliant and my rear seat height up about 15mm over stock as well.

it is another option to consider.

Geez guys, he asked for help mounting an aftermarket shock, not to be told he's dumb for buying one! Way to support a fellow rider.

I haven't mounted a Penske, but I would think the easiest way to mount that remote res would be a couple of hose clamps around the passenger peg mount on the side it exits the shock on. Route the hose where it won't get pinched, and make sure the res is also out of the way of the swingarm/tire when it runs through it's arch of use. No, it probably won't be elegant, but it will be secured.

You might try calling a Penske dealer to see if there is supposed to be a braket with it.
http://www.penskeshocks.com/ Their website isn't real helpful right now.

The Ohlins comes with a bracket that can be mounted using the exhaust can hanging bolt through the bracket on the right passenger peg.
