changing oil

Told you guys I have lots of questions.
If there is a thread already for this, please direct me there.

Today I bought a gallon of Mobil1 Racing 4T 15w-50 and an oil filter.
It's what the dealer recommended
But I forgot to get an oil filter remover tool to remove the filter.

A couple questions:
1) any recomendations on what kind of socket I should use to get the oil plug out without damaging it? The service manual I have does not list. Seems like vice grips are always the last resort. :)

2) what fairings will I need to remove? Which side of the bike? Any tricks for doing this? Again, the service I have manual does explain this.

1) universal oil filter wrench with teeth will do or drive the screwdriver through the filter - nothing like the feeling of warm oil running down your hand and into the sleeve :D the drain plug - I think it was 14mm? or 17mm? - one of the two - the one that fits.

2) no need to take fairings off at all - put i ton center stand and thats all.

BTW, why 15-50? I thought 10-40 was a recommended viscosity?

One more thing...
Changing the oil turned out to be easier than I thought. The only snafu I ran into was the amount of oil I needed to put back in. Nowhere in my manual did I find that information. The dealer sold me a 4 liter container and said it was "about right". So I put it all in and now the level is well about the "hash mark" on the dipstick. So now I'm trying to drain the right amount back out. For the next time, does anyone know the correct amount of oil that goes into the engine?
