Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm new to the forum and would like to begin by saying that the info here is fantastic and very useful. I look forward to becoming a regular contributor.
I bought my 2001 Sprint ST (Blue) yesterday with 6800 miles on the clock. I rode it 200 miles the first day home to my home in Palo Alto, CA. It was fantastic.
But now it's time for its first service under my care.
California BMW/Triumph in Mountain View CA, ( http://www.calbmwtriumph.com/) quoted a ~$400 6000 mile service. This involves flushing all the fluids and a general inspection. After reading the info in this forum, that seems like it's about ~$150 high.
Does anyone know of another authorized Triumph dealer/service center in the San Francisco bay area that might be a little more reasonably priced?
Thanks!
David

Hi David and welcome,
That does look very high to me. That's about $25 more than what my dealer is quoting me for me 12k service.
Unless you have service records for your bike and considering it's age, I would look at these items.
Change oil and filter
Flush and change coolant
Flush and change brake fluids
And maybe the fork oil.
All together this shouldn't add up to what they quote. By a long shot.
My own personal intervals are on these are.
Oil and filter = 3000 miles
Coolant = 2 years
fork oil = 2 years
Brake fluids = 1 year
I would shop around for a shop that will work with you on these.
Sorry, I'm not familiar with your turf but I'm sure someone here can help in that direction.
Nice ride!
Don

Thermostat: T2100715, $78.75
O-ring: T2100713, $5.00
Anti frezze: 3 litres, $20.97
Labour: 2.3 hrs, $147.20
Shop supplies, $6.00
Total: $310.07, Canadian funds including taxes.
Why so much? Because stupid me didn't realize that the previous owner had drained the coolant for whatever reason and replaced it with (basically) straight water. Result?? Lots of rust.
I just hope I've caught it soon enough before it has become a serious problem. The upside is, I had a real nice ride today with nary a problem, my Sprint ran great.

HootieST,
I would wonder if he used it for track days where they didn't allow anti-freeze and didn't change back. Just a thought. Not that that's a bad thing.
If they went this far checking for safety wire holes on the oil drain plug and filter would tell a tale too.
Do you know the previous owner?
Your ST running fine is all that matters. :-D

Bought ST, May 2000. Since then 23,677 miles. Spent $1598.45 on Tires, Battery, Oil, Filters, Fork Oil, Brake Fluid, Chain Lube, Spark Plugs, Antifreeze. Have changed tires 4 times. Used Bridgestone 010's, 020's. Switching to Pirelli Diablo Strada's just to see how long they'll last. Will put them on in June - taking 7500 mile trip - hope they make it.
At .0675 cents per mile, I think Triumph has built a very dependable and good handling sport tourer. Also had a 99 ST before this one. It had some minor problems from factory. They sent in a guy from England, tuned it and drove it for a day. Ran very sweet after he breathed on it. Triumph has been very supportive, and my dealer, PVT, in Chattanooga is very helpful. I do most of the maintenance myself. - Roadduster

Hi,
I bought my 02 sprint in the fall of 05. The previous owner said he'd used only synthetic oil and the bike only had 6500 KM on it. I took it to the nearest authorized dealer in Kingston, Ontario for an oil change and he was disgusted with the condition of the oil, and they checked the VIN number against the Triumph database and found none of the recall work had been done. Basically, it became clear that the previous owner was more careful about keeping the thing washed and looking pretty than doing anything more than bare maintenance. I took it back to the Kingston dealer and he gave it a complete look over. He flushed the coolant, replaced the brake fluid, replaced the front fork oil, checked the valves, and retuned the carbon silencer can (the settings were out of date). The recall work was coverd by Triumph.
I lean on the side of caution. I probably could have gone away waiting longer to do the valves because it turned out he didn't have to adjust them. But all the other stuff was needed and so in the end I paid around $1100 Cdn for the work. I initially thought I was getting a pretty good deal when I bought the bike and the previous owner accepted $500 less on is asking price because I had to have new tires put on. If I'd known I was going to do all the routine maintenance work I would have perhaps tried to barter better.

FWIW .. my local mech, who'se a Trumpy specialist, insists on greasing the rear wheel bearing every 12k miles

Had my first service on the Sprint. I did the oil change myself, $18.00 Canadian for the Triumph oil filter and $39.00 for Mobile 15-40 Synthetic Oil.
I took the bike in for the remainder of the service and it was $117.00.
I guess that's not bad considering all the technology on her. Anyways I have 2000 kilometers on her now, so I am good until the next service.
The next purchase is the Service Manual, so I can learn more about my new toy and see what things I can do.

600-mile service: oil and filter change, total bike look-over. $186.75. Had them check a small leak from the clutch cover (leaky seal), spooge on the rear wheel (not oil, not lube, but not a problem). They noticed I lacked the heat shields ... so I guess they DID do the total bike inspection!

I have recently had a 12K service to the tune of £480 which seems to be the going rate. How about tyres - quoted £150 by my usual Triumph dealer, but used a local bloke and got one for £95.00 for the same Bridgestone tyre, why such a big difference in price? Does make you think you are being ripped off for normal Triumph, the local bloke says he cant do service on my RSbecause he can't get the soft ware from the factory as he is not an approved dealer, could this be classed as a restrictive practice
