semi synthetic

Hi Tri-oomph!,
in case you are concerned there is no problem running on semi synthetic.
My '04 955 has a steady diet of Motul semi synth and it runs fine. I have over 50,000kms on the stuff.

cheers,
DaveM

Dave,

Thanks for the input. You would well know how these bikes do because of all the KMs you have on the clock. I bought the bike used last fall with only 2,500 miles/4,000 KMs and the oil had only been changed twice. Now that I own it, I expect to put about 10-12,000 KMs per year. I thought if I went with the full synthetic, I'd only change the oil once per year. Perhaps it's better to use the semi-synthetic and change it more often? How often do you change your's?

Cheers
John

The running in oil is semisynthetic Mobil 1 10W40 4T. It costs less than the full syn Mobil 1 15W50 4T. Triumph is having some temporary supply problems with both types of the Mobil 1 oil which should be resolved in the next two weeks.

Hi John,
because I am not as technically able as I thought I was when i was younger my shop does my services at every 10,00kms but I change the oil at every 5000kms interval.

So in other words I change my oil twice as frequently as the manual states is required.

I have done this since my first bike (well not really it was a two stroke) and it has served me well.

cheers,
DaveM

My K6 also has Motul semisynth for the last 6000kms. Surprisingly, the level is still the same today! Gonna do another change today before a big trip tomorrow.

Well I ran my bike from the 6,000 mile service interval just six weeks ago to almost the 12,000 mile mark so I asked my dealer today about the cost of the 12k mile service. Around US $325 plus parts.

What surprised me though was that they actually don't follow the recommendations in the manual necessarily. For instance, this doesn't include changing coolant, brake fluid or fork oil. On the one hand, I am glad they don't do what they might consider optional for the customer but on the other, it seems like a lot just to change the oil, check the air filter and plugs and do the valve clearance. I am curious of the experience of other owners. What did your 12k mile service cover and how much $$?

They should be changing the brake fluid and the coolant at that mileage if it's been two years since they were changed last (or you bought the bike). Changing the fork oil requires removing and inverting the fork tubes, kind of a pain compared to bikes with drain bolts in the fork legs.

I just got another quote from a Denver, CO dealer for the 12,000 mile service. This quote was $829 plus valve shims if needed. I didn't even get around to asking if this price was inclusive of the parts and supplies like oil, but I don't think it was. He said to budget $1,000 for this service. Yikes! The quote of $329 in my home town is starting to sound much better even though there are some recommended things they don't include. In the end, I think I will pay for the valve check and possibly the throttle bodies and do most of the rest myself.

Thumbs up Hooray for Local Mechs!

After going to the Triumph dealership near where I work and being quoted a $450 ballpark for JUST THE VALVE check...more if actual adjustments needed to be made. I was planing on hauling the bike 200mi up to my brother (a trained motorcycle mech) and buying him dinner to do it. I fiugred with gas for a truck, dinner, etc it would run me a couple hundred.

On the sugestion of a friend (whose opinon I highly respect) I took it to a local mech that he uses. The gent did the check and found 2 that were a couple thouhsandths out and one that was three. He said while they were still basically ok, that since he was in there he went ahead and shimmed them dialing everything in just right. The whole thign took hime about 4 hours. I showed up as he was wrestling the tank back into place (me being a dunce...filled the tank a day or so ago and the poor guy had to deal with that full tank)

When he gave it a test start the 10 year old o-ring on the gas connection wouldn't reseal and he had to disconnect the tank again, find the right o-ring replace it and reconnect everything. Now. Since the o-ring blew when the bike was running, the engine light came on (it didnt' when he started the bike...only after the o-ring and restart) my quick search here reveled that the ECU should reset in three running temp and cooldown cycles.

But the mech said if it dosn't reset just bring it back and he will get it figured out...no charge

....his charge...for the whole process...with the parts needed?

$200

A BIG thumbs up for the local guys.

20,000 km service

I have a washable airfilter so obviously it was re-used. I needed new rear brake pads & they fitted new spark plugs, but the tappet clearances were all within spec so no re-shimming was necessary. Obviously the oil (semi-synthetic) & filter were changed.

The total cost was the equivalent of approx US $ 300.
