So, had a new chain and sprockets installed today. What a difference! This 'new to me' 2005 Sprint ST would surge at low speeds, and buck when downshifting or just holding a constant speed. Now, it is silky smooth. What a difference that made! I still cannot get over the change in drivability. Went from "I don't think I want to keep this bike" to "I don't want to get off this bike!".
If this is the same as the Speed Triple 1050 then there is a lock nut that attaches the front sprocket that comes loose when downshifting. Was yours loose when you replaced these things and is now tight?
I went thru the exact same thing when I had my FJ1200. Thought for sure it was the carbs and like you was amazed at the transformation when I had the chain and sprockets replaced.
Depends on wear I've had chain and sprockets last up 40,000 to 50,000 kms. Keep an eye on tight spots in the chain when cleaning, lubing and adjusting the chain.
The replacement sprag clutch is heavier and that helped smooth mine out too. Mine doesn't buck any more. Of course I have the stock chain etc adjusted and lubed too and the throttle cables tinkered with at 12000 mi.
FWIW, my chains usually last 30-35,000 miles with lubrication every 500 or so. The original chain on my current ride was done at less than 20k, though, so YMMV.
Thanks for this thread. I have been wracking my brain for a solution to my 2005 Sprint ST low speed bucking. It was beginning to get in the way of my love affair with the bike!
Can confirm that this had the same effect on my 2009 Sprint - i got 68k out of my old chain - rides like a different bike now.
