Help on fuel light

Hi guys,I am a new sprint owner.Well its a 99 but its new to me.I sold my 03 Bonneville America for this jewel, its loaded and in great condition.anyway on with my question....when the key is turned to the on position, should the low fuel light come on?my fuel gauge does not work and i would like to have some way of knowing when i am getting low on fuel.I ran out of gas the other day waiting for the light to come on.so when i got home i had a look at the bulb to see if it was burnt and it was.what came out of the socket was a 14v 3w, if my eyes read it correctly.so i put a 14v back in it.now i am very low on fuel and no illumination yet. Thanks in advance for any replies.

My low fuel light came on also when I recently took the tank off of my 01. The problem turned out to be that when I put everything back together I failed to push the two prong conector located under the back side of the tank fully together. This sends a signal to the low fuel light. Pain to get at as you have to remove most of the fairing, seat and then tank to see if it is connected. Simple fix though and first place I would look.

I know this is the reverse of your problem, but a place to start.

There is a quick way to check to see if the fuel light is working.
Remove the tank. Take the two wire plug and jumper it wire from one pin to the other, wiring harness side. The light should come on. When you remove the wire it should go off. This of course is done with the key in the on pos.

You can also do this for the fuel gage at the big plug where the fuel lines connect in the tank. When you jumper wire the fuel gage wire, again key on,the fuel gage should go all the way to full reading if the gage is working.
If it does then you have a bad sending unit in the tank.
The sending unit in the tank will cause the fuel gage and the fuel light not to work.

You could pull the sending unit out and work the float assem. up and down while pluged into the bike ,with the key on and see if if the gage moves.
When you do this your looking to see if the float is sticking.

When the float is all the way down the fuel light should come on. When all the way up the gage should read full. Check to see if there are any broken wires on the sending unit assem. OR if the is any junk or corr.

You can do a OHM's-Volts test while you have it out also.

well it was the light that was not in all the way.And yes it does come on when you turn on the key and goes out when the motor starts.I still don't think the fuel gauge works.i took out the sending unit and messed with it ,it looked fine.
