Looking for GPS recommendations
I'm in the market for a GPS receiver and was looking for words of wisdom from those of you who have made this investment. I'd like one with XM weather but am not opposed to going without that option. These receivers are a bit of an investment and I'd hate to buy one only to turn around and sell it on EBay out of disappointment.

Heh. I just bought a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 on eBay after several days of research. It's not the latest, it's not the greatest, it's big, it lacks Bluetooth, & it cost me a grand total of $260 with a 2GB card & shipping. I'd have gotten the Zumo 550 if my budget was a little healthier.
Cheers,
-Kit

I'm on my second low end Garmin GPS. Currently the Legend Cx. It's a basic unit but with a memory card boost and city navigator program it meets my needs. I miss a few turns and it recalulates. I'll eventually find my way.
I have been looking at the new Garmins with the wide screen and blue tooth technology. Speaks 19 languages (which I can't hear on my bike) and even personalizes your route by allowing you to put in type of vehicle being driven (car, truck, BIKE). You can specify thing like NO freeways, etc. You can pay an extra monthly fee and it will pick up the traffic broadcast (some cities put out) and it will adjust your route around traffic automatically. I just don't like the $800 retail price.

I bought the Garmin 550 and mounted it using the Gadget guy's mount. The whole thing cost me $950.00. The mount was worth the $150.00 and the 550 has been great...if you have the money I think its the only way to go...and remember you can aslo use the 550 with the supplied bracket with your car.

Plus 1 on the Zumo, $648.00 from Amazon.com. I mounted it through my handle bar (Triple Calmp)by adding a longer hecks screw $1.18 and it places the Zumo in just about the same spot as Gadget Guy Mount. The XM Receiver will cost about 180.00 more I think.

I also have a Garmin Zumo 550 and have never regretted buying it. The Zumo, and the Garmin support, are worth every penny.

I bit the bullet and bought the Zumo 550 and have been very happy with it. I eventually want to get the XM NavTraffic antenna because I actually use it more in my work vehicle than on the bike and that feature, I think, would really come in handy driving around SoCal's freeways.
I wanted a unit that I could use both on the bike and in a cage and I felt that since the bike is where it is going to see the most abuse (weather, vibration, etc) it was better to get a unit that was designed for the bike and adaptable to a cage then vise versa and the Zumo came with the mounts for both. Unfortunately the price sucks. I just did a quick search on pricegrabber and they can be found for just over 6 bills. I bought mine at BuyDig.com for $690.00 back in June, they are down to $630.00 now.
On the 2610,
Several of the listers on the Sabre/Magna mailing list have recently bought this unit because of a really good deal on factory refurbs. FYI, There was some issues with the unit randomly changing screens or locking onto a screen and having to be turned off/on to get it to act normal again. This seemed to happened only when being used on a bike, not while in a cage. The consensus was that the IR function in bright sunlight was the problem. Turning the IR feature off or putting some black tape over the IR receiver fixed the problem. YMMV
Speed Safe,
Don

Zumo 550+XM radio+Autocom system. It all works quite well together. I used this system on a trip to NC and Tenn last month and for the most part the Zumo performance was great, except for one route in Boone,NC. The turns came so close together the gps was about 500ft to slow.

+1 on the Garmin Zumo 550 and the gadgetguy mount. I love mine, and I always get compliments on the mount system. the 550 has XM (radio? dunno about weather) and bluetooth support, and comes with the moto mount as well as a car mount and power adapter, which I really like, since I can swap it between my car and bike.
Also - if you can, or can get somebody to help you, definitely wire it into a switched power lead on the bike. I love never having to worry about the GPS draining my battery.

Hi noob'
Haven't heard from you for a while. Glad to read that you went the switched route.
