Sprocket question

Sorry if it's been asked before, but I couldn't find an answer in the forum & the shop manual is utterly infuriating in its obfuscation of information on the front sprocket....

On my old 885 bike, there was oil under the sprocket cover & seals & gaskets had to be replaced whenever it was removed. Is that also the case with my '04 955, or can I just pull the cover, swap the sprockets, & put it back on?

Thanks,
-Kit

The cover is secured with 8mm bolts, and can be removed to reveal the sprocket. There is no need to worry about oil or gaskets. You will need a 36mm socket and considerable leverage to remove the sprocket nut.
I've never encountered a set-up like you describe. How is the oil sealed where the chain enters the housing? Is it all in an oil bath like very old bicycles?

Thanks, Dusty. That's what it looked like from the outside, but I've learned not to pop covers off without checking about gaskets & such first....

Here's a picture of an 885 motor:

The sprocket cover is in the lower right of the photo. Note that the oil filler is part of the cover, & that the clutch release cylinder attaches to it as well. So no, the chain is not in an oil bath. The part is just far more complex than any sprocket cover ever needs to be.

Cheers,
-Kit

Thanks, Kit,

I've no experience of the885cc motor. At least Triumph seem to have made things simpler with that redesign.Good luck with the sprocket change. Most folks on here, including me, seem to prefer the 18T for the improved low end grunt and acceleration. I presume that's what you're doing too.
