Hi all,

I just found this site and have spent hours reading it - what a lot of great info!

Anyway, I'm about to change my bikes, and am considering a Sprint ST. Although I'd love an 05 model, it's a bit out of my budget, so I'm looking for a used one, or maybe a new 04 model (currently available at ablut £6500, will they drop any further?).

If I go down the used route, what should I be looking for? Are there any know common faults, or areas of concern I should check before I buy?

Thanks in anticipation!
Nigel.

If you troll through the archives you will find some of the problems individuals have had with the sprints. However, with that said, I will see I can summarize some of them quickly:

1) The bike has a great motor, one of its strongest points

2) There are a number of recalls on these bikes, most notably the fuel connectors. Some bearing and clutch cable recalls. Ensure these are addressed.

3) Otherwise, I would see if you can determine how well it was taken care off. Do they have records of the oil changes, are the sprockets/chain worn out. Has it been down. Do the forks leak. Has the 12k service been performed (this is an expensive service if you have a dealer do it). If used, did the previous owner install any accesories that you want?

All said, these are pretty solid bikes. They really don't break in till you have about 9 to 10k on the scoot. I put 16k miles on mine this year and except for the fuel connectors, its been a extremely reliable mount.

Remember the Red ones rock (oops they didn't make those faster red ones in 04).

Like Tom says, solid, reliable and fun bike.

I'm using my 03 ST for holidays and commuting, slabbing and twisties... great machine.

You might want to do the headlight mod. (Most) European models have only one headlight working at one time, needs only 2 relays to pop-in the relay holder (already there) to have both lights work simultaneously.

Only had the fuel connector recall. I'm at 46K Km in almost 2 years.

... Owner Care would be the biggest issue for me in buying used. I bought New so I could control break in.. '02 and up model years have improvements over the '01 and down models.

A new 2004 model would be a good buy, especially as they come fitted with the colour matched panniers, heated grips and rear rack as standard. If you can gert one for £6500 (that's £1000 below list price), then you are getting a very good deal.
