Bags & Pipes
No, not a question about Scottish musical instruments....
My new RS has a carbon fiber can that I'm rather fond of:
I was told by the PO that the SSSA RSs could use ST luggage, & I will be getting some luggage very soon.
I've seen lots of pics of STs, & they look like they generally have the exhaust in the same place as my RS. Except the STs with bags. They all look like the can parallels the swingarm. This makes me wonder: will I have to replace my can if I get luggage? Midpipe as well?
If anyone has a clue to spare, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
-Kit

Hard to say for sure, but it looks like the can on yours comes up quite a bit higher than on my ST. On mine, the centerline of the can is slightly above the axle. Also, there is a bracket connecting the passenger peg to the can that lowers it a couple of inches, whereas yours seems to be connected directly to the peg. I would guess that you likely don't have enough room to install the stock bags, unfortunately.

Kit,
Congrats on your new baby. Looks sweet. Your RS is really a half faired ST, so all ST parts will fit. The passenger pegs are the lower version(ST) so the bag brackets will bolt right on, but I think the angle of the pipe is too high. The ST's had adjustable pipes for with and without bags.
note the angle of this pipe:
Maybe a drop bracket to lower the pipe with bags?
Here is the DSSA RS, note the different passenger peg mount and bracket:

BTW I would be happy to do a tuneboy diagnostic on your new toy just to check things out.
Also, take those 6-pots from yout Trident and bolt them right up !

The ST's with the bags need to have the can swiveled down for clearance. I have the Givi bags on my ST that actually came off an "02 RS. They sit higher than the stock Trumpy ones so I don't have to lower the can.
If you can, I'd sure have a look at these. I think they are made better, seal better, hold more than the stockers and in addition to swing out loading have a top loading capability. And they are uglier and can double as sliders:-) Sometimes I use one side to hold ice and drinks and the other side to hold the food for the guys.
Great looking bike BTW. Two other things you may consider getting are a front fender extender and a radiator guard. Also, RS's look great with the lower fairing shell IMO.

Thanks, guys.
Chef, I may take you up on that TuneBoy offer. I've been kinda thinking of it since I got the bike, but fueling seems spot-on so far. I've been thinking about the Tokicos as well, but the stockers do a pretty good job & I just haven't felt like messing with it. (Maybe something to do with spending every free moment in September working on the 'dent....)
Don, can I ask what kind of Givi setup you have? I see an RS with bags on Givi's site, but nowhere can I find anything about a mounting kit! Are you using the SW Motech adapters? (I'm loving the bike, but I'm dying w/o my hard bags!)
Thanks,
-Kit

Hi Kit,
When I bought my bike it didn't have the bags but there was an '02 RS that had the Givi bags on it already. The guy that bought the RS didn't want the bags so I took them. The mounting racks are the standard Givi mounts. We did have to modify them a bit (very little to it) to fit my ST. The brace that attaches to the passenger pegs was about an inch short so we just brazed tabs on the braces and drilled holes to match the ST peg location. Reattached with a longer 6mm bolt and locking nut and it has been solid ever since.
Either RS or ST mounting brackets will work whatever you find. If it's ST mounts you just have to shorten an inch, or leave them alone and drill new location holes. That's it and no problem at all since everything else lines up.
(At least it did on mine)
I think in my album I have pics of the mounts and bags on the bike.
You know, about your seat cowl. There was a guy here quite awhile ago that put a Bonneville chrome wire tank bag holder on his seat cowl. Man, it did look nice. His bike was black too.

Thanks, Don. I had the devil of a time finding your album; I think one of the site changes must have nuked the link in your sig. Here's the URL that worked for me:
http://www.triumphrat.net/photogalle...um789/album66/
That's exactly what I'm looking for, but Givi doesn't acknowledge its existence.
Maybe I'll just get the SW Motech mounts. They're only hideous with the bags off....
Cheers,
-Kit

It only take a couple minutes to remove the Motech mounts.
