Question Rear Cush drive on the 02 ST

Cush drive on an 02 Sprint ST, should it be tight enough not to feel play when moving the rear sprocket by hand, or should you have some slack there?

There should be no movement. In 2002 there was a design change on the cush drive rubber inserts. You may still have the old style in there.

Question Cush drive

Stlakid, have you had to change your cush drive rubber inserts on you “02” RS as of yet? I have 35,000 miles on my ST and just wondering what might be the average wear rate for this drive?

No. I was lucky as my RS is a late production and already had the newer parts fitted as standard. By hand you should not get any play at all. I have 30k on mine so far and the assembly is still snug to assemble. There is no real 'pre-load' to speak of but if you have slop in the assembly by hand when you have 100+ hp on tap you would get a driveline with noticable 'snatch' to it. According to Bike Bandit they are $15.35 each and they usually quoth Triumph LIST prices to the penny. A bit expensive, but what Triumph parts are not.

Something you could check into.....

The rear hub is not made by Triumph and seems to be a bit 'universal' The rear sprocket from a 1999-2006 GSXR1000 is a perfect fit. Looking at the pictures it 'looks' as if the Suzuki cush drive rubbers are 'VERY' similar in design. At $6.37 each I would at least go to the dealer and take a good look at them.

You could put some shims in there made from an inner tube for a quick fix. Someone else here did that a while ago.
