actual mpg vs computer mpg...

During my 5 day trip down to the Smoky Mountains I covered 2173 miles.
This was a great opportunity to validate the accuracy of the MPG computer on my 06 Sprint.
Here are the numbers:
Used 46.478 gallons for 2173 miles, my computer indicated an average usage of 41.3 mpg.
The actual number is 46.753 mpg...this is nice!
My riding was fairly aggresive, mixed highway and mountain roads, medium to heavy on the acceleration.

So there you have it! I was disappointed slightly when I changed from imperial to US gallons (selecting #3) and the indicated mpg dropped from 50 mpg to about 39-40 mpg...but the reality is, our stock Sprints are laying out almost 47 mpg over the average ride.

On my trip to Wyoming in Sept. I got a high of 52 mpg, surprisingly at elevations of 7500-11000 feet. Overall though I got about the same as airrider03, 46-47. Here at home though I only get about 38 unless I am doing a lot of freeway miles, I'm having too much fun with the loud handle.
Speed Safe,
Don

Strangely I have found the trip computer to be quite reliable in displaying lts/100km. Also I have learned to trust the kms remaining display although I get the occassional glitch with the fuel bars (e.g. moving from 3 to 2 when I switch off and start again).

You guys with the mpg displays, are you sure the trip computer and you speak the same language about what a gallon really is?

I forget which is which on the three settings but AFAIK the three are

Kilometres/Litres
US Gallons/Miles
UK Gallons/Miles

1 US gallon = 0.832673844 Imperial gallons

I.E. a US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon - which explains the mpg diffferences when switched, you will get less miles per US gallon than a UK gallon, cos it's less petrol/gas

So it only speaks without forked tongue if it's set correct for UK/US

Have you noticed how wierd the word gallon looks if you see/type it a lot ?

Liters are the same all over the world although people tend to spell them differently! The opposite holds true for gallons.

I checked my actual mpg out of curiousity the other day having reset the 2nd trip on my last fill up.
The average is always around 43.8 (give or take a digit) and the actual was over 46.

Not a dumb question. Yes, setting 3 is US gallons.

To the original poster: did you reset the average mpg readout before your trip? If not, I believe the figutre it gives you is an average of all tanks used and miles ridden since the last time it was reset. This may well have accounted for at least a portion of the discrepancy you noted between calcluated mpg (miles/gallons) and what the trip computer said. Either way, decent mpg!!

Take care - BB
